Have you gone through this?

I was wonderin if anybody else had gone through this. I am tryin to figure out what i want to do with my life, what I should study when I go to college. But all I think about is money and exspensive cars. When i am thinking of a major right away i think about the amount of money I could make in this profession. Right now it is between finance and mechanical engineering. I know that if i go into finance that one day i'll be able to make a sh!* load of money, but if i did engineering i'd either try and get into the aftermarket industry or after I get my bachelors try to go to school to be a chiropractor. Right now i work for a chiropractor, and he is telling to go to school to be a chiropractor my mom is trying to get me to go to school to be a chiropractor and i would like to be a chiropractor. The only problem i have is that if I go to school to be a chiropractor i might not make as much money as i could in finance. But if I go and become a chiropractor i am almost guaranteed to make a good living. The chiropractor I work for makes at least $200,000 a year. You know maybe i will just go to be a chiropractor. You guys don't have to respond if you don't want to, i just really wanted to get this off of my chest. It feels good to let it out. I feel as if I am thinking a little clearer now. I think going to school to be a chiropractor just might be for me.

table of job values.........

1/high paying job that you enjoy
2/high paying job that you dont enjoy
3/low paying job that you enjoy
4/low paying job that you don't enjoy
5/high paying job that you hate
6/low paying job that you hate
7/cheese factory shift work.

try and pick the one highest up the table.

I have to say that I would rate a low paying job that you enjoy over a high paying one you don't enjoy. If you are hapy in life then why care so much about money. Do what you like, and if that happens to be something that is high paying then that is good for a car addiction which most of us here can acclaim to. I want to go into biotech. but i reall yenjoy science and engineering, and it has the added perk of being one of the highest potential fields in existence.

DO WHAT YOU ENJOY

Yup, Join me to that club, only I'm the 19-y/o dreaded horror story that your parents warned you about.

This semester is the 4th semester of college I've had. Sucks, huh?

Yeah, and I still don't have a real major. I was going to go into Secondary Math Ed but I'm thinking now that I won't be happy in something like that. Think of it this way, unless you're 27, still just going to school for the sh!ts and giggles of it, and living at home with no night life to speak of, then you're in perfectly good shape. I'm not dreadfully worried (with the exception of wanting to savagely beat my mother for not getting off my back). Like the addage says: Take something you like and you're good at, then find a way to get paid for it!

(now if only I could get paid for being a smart@ss :o )

Like stated already, it is better to do something you like and be happy, even if it pays less. Most wealthy people I know of have all the $$ but are miserable and bitter. (This does not mean all wealthy people are). If you manage your money and budget wisely you can still obtain nice things

I remember feeling the same way. I went for a "high-paying" major, but in the end money didn't make up for the miserable time I was having from "8-5" (more like 6am to 11pm).

Being a Rock Star seems to be the ultimate solution, but there are 999,999,999,999,999,999,999 other kids out there who are competing for you job.

well i finally mustered up enough guts to talk to my parents about this dilema. They suggested that i go to school for business and take courses that teach you how to open and operate a business. They know that my true passion is with cars so they said when i get my degree i could open a performance parts shop or get a job with a good car dealership so i could learn how to operate a dealership and then one day open my own dealership. It made me feel good to here my parents tell me this, because now i know that they finally realize that i have a passion for cars and they are embrassing that passion. this was something i had thought of previously but passed up in my mind because i thought that my parents would disapprove. but i think that i might have finally actually chosen a path. and i think that i am ready to walk that path. I just want to say thanks to everyone for your insight. If you have any questions or comments please post a reply.

Damn. Your parents have a good idea. Not the part about working at a dealer, though. Dealers are full of rejects and scum who will convert you to their loserly ways. You will only want to kill yourself.

A Ferrari dealer is different. You make good connections, and you don't have to become a slimely salesman. Ferarri salesman are very happy with their careers.

I'd say go ahead with business & engineering (double major?). Learn the right way to design the machines, and the money will follow. Plus it sounds like mega fun... imagine the mods you could do to your own car when you have knowledge like that!

Just stick with the engineering part of the car. Vehicle interior/exterior designers, much like rock musicians, are a dime a dozen. I know this because Tyler knows this.

Not a double major DMC12. I'll probably major in mechanical engineering and minor in business. At least this way i focus on the engineering aspect which is what i would love to do and i also learn the finer points of business operations and management. If I dont get to open my own parts company which is what I would love to do, you know be retailer and sell parts from other companies but also design my own parts and sell them and make some badass shop cars, then at least i have my major in engineering and a grounding in business so i will be lucritive in the auto industry. Maybe try to get a job with GM or something. That would be pretty cool. But as of now i am aiming towards designing my own parts, that is my ultimate goal.
