Looking to purchase

Hopefully this weekend I am going with my friend and his mom to look at and possibly buy a WRX. I have some questions tho. BTW lets not start that "fucking rich kids" thing again. He is looking for a used WRX so probably an 02, or 03 for a decent one what should he expect to pay? Are there any major recall or idiosencracys (gosh i can't spell)? What are the sales men going to bull shit us about? Don't say then they wouldn't be tricks because I know all the mercedes ones, my dad was, and all his friends either work at or own a benz dealership, but back on topic. What will break first? Does anyone have the crash test results, I looked and couldn't find them? Thanks. If he gets it you'll see a mods thread in here, we are closely following the AF WRX buildup, and our first planned mod is the EBAY special intake only $39. Our goal is to be able to beat all the integra and civic ricers at his school, along with the RX8, and the MR that are also there. Hopefully when I am 16 I'll get an EVO and we'll have both. My dad took a 2003 WRX Wagon on trade for his EVO GSR, and said it was much slower, so if they try to compare the EVO the base WRX, we can catch them! Thanks alot guys!!!!!

Re: Looking to purchase

prolly around 16-19 for a good one with less than 50000, no real problem unless it was beat(find out who owned it), salesmen will bulshit about anything just remember, there are plenty out there work him down on the price, nothing shuld break anytime soon if taken care of, the car is super safe it has a built in roll cage, ide shy away from crappy brand product simply because u get what you pay for...good luck..remember dont rush it wait for a good deal, unless money isnt an issue then i would simply say get one that wasnt beat.....

Re: Looking to purchase

$60 for strut bars

You should be able to find something for less.

Re: Looking to purchase

As has been noted MANY times before, skip the BOV and the intake. They don't make the car any faster. Skip the plug wires; the stock ones are fine until you've done some major upgrading.

Get a rear sway bar to get rid of the push. People have said bad things about the JIC coilovers. Some people really like them, though. Many of your prices seem a bit high. You can shop around and get products for cheaper; the WRX aftermarket is huge. $60 for strut tower braces is not bad if they're good parts. If they're crappy hinged braces, $60 is a bit much. You want a solid peice that goes straight across, and if you can afford a lightweight one it would be better. Cusco makes an excellent V-brace for the Impreza, for example.

Actually, though, "beating ricers" sounds to me like he wants to drag/street race. So, for that application, you could skip the coilovers, tower braces, and the other suspension stuff. Get some lowering springs to get the sporty look and a little bit of aggresiveness in the suspension, but put the real money into the motor and air flow.

Don't just get a high-flow cat. The WRX has three catalytic converters, and they're all over the place. Get a full catless (or high-flow) turbo-back exhaust, catless up-pipe system. Upgrade your intercooler hoses. If you want real power, upgrade your turbo or port/polish the stock one. Lightening the pullies and flywheels is a good idea, but I'd suggest an engine management system first: Utec or Accessport or something. A manual boost controller (do some research first) is a good start if you can't afford a real management system.

Do your homework and make your modifications fit your application. Don't get things just because everyone else has them. Everyone else is a moron. Unless you're going to be taking the WRX to your local road course or autocross on a regular basis, the $1200 you would spend on coilovers could be much better spent on springs AND a full exhaust AND an uppipe AND a boost controller. The $60 you'd spend on really crappy strut tower braces you'd never fully use could be spent on a turbo gauge.

Thanks alot, my friend is unemployed, but makes money somehow babysitting. We are going for the most bang for his buck, so getting rid of the cats is one of the first mods, we want like a highflow cat in the exhaust, and also do a downpipe. Those prices were a 15 minute look at this months SCC. He said he wants "loud as fuck but not ricery," i have no idea what that means. Don't say street racing, cops may be around lol. I was feeling going to one cat, and a cold air intake. To equilize intake and exhaust pressure. If he can come up with the money I'll get the turbo ported. How makes a good but inexpensive chip for the WRX. Warranties are no matter, it'll probably be out of warranty when he gets it anyway, b/c of miles. This could become AF Budget WRX build, please we want cheap but effective suggestions. What about a Vishnu Chip, and other stuff from them, is their stuff worth the money? I told him that he can't do anything to the appearance of the car, b/c all the money goes into the motor. I know that plug wires really dont do much. What about Tein Sport Lowering Springs? Also will the Hawk pads do much on the stock calipers? I also want to do a full (Motor, Tranny, Rear End, and Radiator) Royal Purple Synthetic switch, I know that sounds stupid but on "Trucks" They picked up like 10HP, plus that will last longer consider my friend will drive the piss out of it. Heres part of an I-M conversation, I thought it was kind of funny.
AkagiDriftMaster [8:02 PM]: hey loser
BearCats1122 [8:02 PM]: answer ur cell
AkagiDriftMaster [8:02 PM]: sorry I missed your call
BearCats1122 [8:02 PM]: its ok we didnt go
AkagiDriftMaster [8:02 PM]: oh ok
BearCats1122 [8:03 PM]: turn ur phone on
BearCats1122 [8:03 PM]: lol
AkagiDriftMaster [8:03 PM]: I put it way
AkagiDriftMaster [8:03 PM]: *away
BearCats1122 [8:03 PM]: can u get it
AkagiDriftMaster [8:03 PM]: :-X
AkagiDriftMaster [8:03 PM]: no
BearCats1122 [8:04 PM]: haha aight
AkagiDriftMaster [8:04 PM]: my house is 793-3355
AkagiDriftMaster [8:04 PM]: i have to get off aol for you to call
BearCats1122 [8:05 PM]: my mom said she said it would be funny if u went with us and the salesmen tried to tell this all this shit cuz u know more than them lol then when they lie and tell us shit u can make them look like dicks
AkagiDriftMaster [8:05 PM]: yes! I am with my mom this weekend, lets go then
BearCats1122 [8:05 PM]: ok
BearCats1122 [8:06 PM]: dont the salesmen try to bullshit u
AkagiDriftMaster [8:06 PM]: yea
BearCats1122 [8:06 PM]: u can be like bitch please
AkagiDriftMaster [8:06 PM]: damn straight
AkagiDriftMaster [8:06 PM]: the'll tell you its faster than it is, a better deal, or they can't go lower on a used car or trade, and I know most of the tricks
AkagiDriftMaster [8:08 PM]: for example when they tell you what they'll give you for a trade, the salesmen gets a paper from the manager that has the amount, lets say $5,000 then there will be lines under in, lets say 3, that means that the dealership can actually afford to buy it for $5,300, but they are going to try and steal it from you
BearCats1122 [8:09 PM]: yea u should get some info on the subies so u can serve the dealer
AkagiDriftMaster [8:10 PM]: ok, I know that they have less than 227hp, and they aren't faster than an evo, i'm sure they'll bring up evo's
AkagiDriftMaster [8:10 PM]: but I won't serve them on safety
BearCats1122 [8:11 PM]: arnt all subs good saftey
AkagiDriftMaster [8:12 PM]: yeah
AkagiDriftMaster [8:12 PM]: but they may exaderate (HTF d o you spell that)
AkagiDriftMaster [8:12 PM]: FYI its "Subie" your way sounds like a sandwich
BearCats1122 [8:13 PM]: haha my b
AkagiDriftMaster [8:13 PM]: b?
BearCats1122 [8:13 PM]: bad
AkagiDriftMaster [8:13 PM]: ah

BTW i'm akagi and hes bearcats, don't call me.

The WRX doesn't have 227 hp?? Is that what I read in your posted convo? It DOES have 227 hp and 217 lb of tq, those numbers aren't to the ground but that is what the motor is rated at the crank.

As far as what you need to do to the car first is learn how to drive it and not run it into a tree. Also, you are so determined to buy an intake don't buy a CAI go with a Turbo XS short ram. In an article I just read, it gives the most power out of any intake I have seen put on a stock WRX. 5 hp and 2 lbs of tq, not the best bang for your buck but the best intake for the situation you are in.

Re: Looking to purchase

Changing intakes on a WRX is a fantastic notion, but the real restriction is how much flow the intercooler has.

Re: Looking to purchase

ok, the WRX doesn't have 227 WHP, sure it may have 227 hp at the flywheel, but I don't give two shits about flywheel power. Also how much is the Turbo XS short ram? How about this a new higherflow intercooler, deleted cats, and maybee some turbo work. Does anyone make a kit to upgrade the internals of the stock turbo?

Re: Looking to purchase

The EVO for example is RATED @ 271 HP, put it on a dyno, and pull 233-241 WHP

I know......but Subaru doesn't advertise the 227hp at the wheels and neither does any other company. The stock WRX puts down around 189 AWD hp at the ground.

The short ram intake Turbo XS offers is 170.00 at their website but other vendors sell it for way cheaper.

Also comparing the WRX and the EVO right off the showroom floor, there really is no comparison, Evolution all day long. Now the comparible car to the EVO is the STi. The only reason I say this is you keep coming back to Evolution comparisons. If your buddy is thinking between an EVO or a WRX, he should look into an STi instead.

Re: Looking to purchase

the first things i think u should get is a cold air intake dont know what kind (ur choice) 3inch exhaust from the turbos back with 1 high flow cat and if u want it to be loud dont install a resonator thats what ma mate did and now u can tell the difference insound to all the other subies.. and u should also get a FMIC

A FMIC wouldn't show any gains until a larger turbo was put on the car. The stock intercooler is fine for the TDO4 turbo that is on the car. You can improve on the cooling of the stock unit by purchasing some IC hoses, from SAMCO or Perrin, I would go with SAMCO. Otherwise the FMIC is just gonna be pretty to look at until you change your turbo system to a larger unit.
