Christmas Day Drive... and some fun.

So what did you do on your Christmas day?

I tell ya what I did.

Highway 74, Ortega Highway.

It's nothing fancy, nothing super fast (although if traffic is clear you can blitz on it), and it's far from super technical.

But it is a nice drive that you can do mostly in 4th gear. Traffic was heavy so I was limited to only very short bursts of speed. All is good, probably was being watched by CHP airplanes.

After 44 miles of liesurely driving, we headed South on the 5 fwy (as seen on the map) for a few exits.

Got into a tangle with a Black Honda Civc, probably a '97 ish. He had exhaust and at least an intake. With this area being fairly rich, I bet he had at least a B series swap with goodies.

I walked him something aweful in 4th gear. But he was still pretty quick for a Honda. Suprised me that he was able to keep up. The guy seemed pretty cool, we kept nodding to each other looking at each others rides.

We go off at the same exit, but Since I was sorta following my Stepdad on his Yamaha, I couldn't really go play with the Civic.

Turns out, the Civic ended up at the same place we were going for lunch. He musta worked at the Marriot Hotel/Resort in Dana Point. Small World.

Skip hours and hours ahead, the drive home was everything short of boring.

10:30 at night, Christmas day... means little to no traffic out. Mmm. Get a call from a buddy, wants to hang out. Sweet I'm hungry. Let's roll!

I live about 1/4 mile from the freeway, and sometimes late at night when the air is still enough. You can hear people racing, tonight was one of those nights.

I pulled up to the light where you make a right hand turn, then you take a quick 30 meter sprint and hit the onramp.

I had the window down, it was cold as hell... not sure why I had it down. But I did. I hear the sounds of roaring ( roaring) motors through fart can exhausts coming my way. I wait paitently. Trying to mentally visualise where on the freeway they were and trying to calculate how fast they might be traveling, hoping that when I hit the onramp at full throttle I come out onto the freeway along side them.

They're getting closer, sounds like they're moving. Wait...

They must be at the exit before my street, that's a good 1/4 mile away. Man these guys are loud. Hmm 1/4 mile, 60mph = 1 mile per minute... 1 quarter mile per 15 seconds... they must be doing 90 mph... they'll be here in about 6 seconds... fuck.. GO!

Make my turn and start mashing gears. Hit the onramp at full tilt. Bottom out my suspension as I make the incline, at the end of the onramp I'm starting to reach the end of 3rd gear, shift to 4th climbing up past 100mph...

I look to my left, if my calculations were correct. They should be along side me right now...

Where are they...

Odd... well I do suck at math so my chance to feel smart was shot to hell. Oh well.

Start to slow down... disappointed...

Still looking around, now that I'm moving along at a pretty good clip, I can't hear them...

I then just look casually to my left to see a Honda Civic with two guys in it looking over at me with a look.

I guess in my hurry to catch up and play, I must of passed them up in the short distance I had, I guess they saw me sprint onto the freeway well over 110mph.

I didn't realise that I had passed them. I guess I ruined their buzz. Musta made them feel slow. I guess it was just them racing... errr driving fast. Their car was obnoxiously loud too, one of the louder farty cans I've heard.

So, no racing there. Just a buzz kill for both of us I guess.

Rather uneventful Christmas day, but it was fun none-the-less.

Don't feel bad, at least you had some fun, and hey, you didn't get a ticket, that's always good.

Blitzing freeways are the best!

Go find a Z06 already and race...

Re: Christmas Day Drive... and some fun.

well done. i drive my car like a grandma in a buick most of the time, but turning on to the freeway onramp at 20-25mph in 1st gear and then mashing the pedal to the floor and breaking the tires loose like crazy is one of my favorite things to do in the world

YO! if Dat Civic had Nawwwwsss you'd be out...

That's cool that the other dude in the Black Civic was cool, and the fact that he kept up with you was another thing! Well, I said "screw it" and decided to keep mine. Later on, hopefully by the summer I'm going to drop in an H22 motor, and just a few bolt-ons. That will be nice, plus my civic is acting kinda funny, probably cause of the gas and weather. Anyway...

Either way, good story, math never was my greatest subject either. But that was funny that you passed up those other guys. Late...
