RPM problem

I have this problem with my 2000 Maxima:
RPM would jump or RPM flucuate, when driving at 70mph
which is what I cruise most of the time rpm at around 2400rpm
then suddenly jump to 3500 and sometime up to 4000 rpm for 1 sec
for no reason. Anyone out there experience this problem before?

Do you mean your engine revs up on occassion or just the tachometer?

RPM jump up and MPH stay the same but you can hear the engine scream for around 1 sec the most.

Most RPM related problems on fuel injected cars come from a faulty air/fuel sensor or the throttle position sensor. A trip to the dealership's diagnostic computer will probably confirm this, your looking at around $200.00 to fix. You might want to try removing and cleaning out your throttle body and cleaning your injectors.

Transmission problems.... Sounds like it's hunting for gears.
***OR***
Are you sure your not stepping on the gas to get some speed? That causes the torque converter to UNLOCK, thus allowing your engine to rev so you get more power in 4th gear (auto). Release the gas a bit and your converter locks up. (like a clutch on a 5 speed)

If thats what your car is doing, it's NORMAL.

When my car is cold and I give it some gas, it doesn't want to get out of 1st gear and it just over-runs itself then jumps into 2nd. Almost like being in neutral and moving at the same time.

Miker, you are right they replaced the throttle position sensor.
But the Nissan dealer near my house can't fix the problem after
I left my car there twice. Another Nissan dealer fix the problem
but this dealer was around 30 minutes from my home. Miker they
should hire you overthere instead hire those guys that don't even
know what they are doing.

Here's the newest problem.

I floored it around a turn and I didn't get out of first. It flew up to 5000 RPM and I never heard it shift to 2nd, but I think it did.... I just didn't hear it. Wierd stuff, I really don't feel like pumpin out 200-1000 bucks to fix it because I'm about to start soopin it up....
