I am sad...

I took my True Street Stang down to my local hobby store to let the guys look at, since they're always commenting at how strange it is that I pay $4 for pieces of plastic and stare at the kits for 20 minutes and then don't buy any. They weren't that impressed. After talking to them for a few minutes, I realized that I am a complete fanatic and there really isn't anyone like me here (in College Station) You would think with 60,000 students and 65,000 people in CS, along with 70,000 in Bryan (you drive from one to the other without being out of the city) there would be SOMEONE who builds cars like this??? ANYONE???? I feel so alone

There are no clubs, no contests, nothing.

Re: I am sad...

Hey, I lived in State College, PA for 3 years and the only other modeller I met in those 3 years built only armor....
Strange as it seems, there aren't as many of us as we would like.

Come down to Houston. There is a model car club here that is a decent size. They are mostly into domestic which should be perfect for you. I've talked to the guy who runs the club, but never met them. Domestics aren't my thing.

Being the fourth largest city in the US (I think), you'd expect more model car builders, but that's the only group I know of around here. We have a good number of hobby shops, but military focus is high. Big on R/C, too. Decent model car stuff, but could be better.

Awhile back tried to gather AF members in Houston. Got 3 people. Technically only 2, since rmg313 lacks a car, his mobility is limited. Still think that's nuts for a city this big, especially with all the car enthusiast in the city, domestics and imports.

We are a very small population, the model car builders.

Re: I am sad...

Hey 99civicchic, I used to live In Hearne. It's a very small town nearby. I moved to Conroe and then here to Alabama. There were alot more people in Conroe (near houston) that shared my intrests in modeling.
I have a few friends that used to love modeling but now just drink alot...kinda sad actually.

We're quite lucky in Atlanta. We've got a very diverse group of builders in our club, and we have a great showing from A/F...including CADguy, Ol' dude, Veryron, Mach 1 2003, and our latest victim GTmike400. Between me, Veyron, CADguy and Mach I 2003, we have a lot more exotics/imports than most. Hard to believe in the heart of Dixie. Lots of traditional builders in our club as well, including Ol' dude who carries the torch for street rods/domestics, along w/the occasional import/exotic. We get some people (including our club President) who drive from neighboring states to attend our meetings. Since we've all met and go to most meetings and shows, we're now good friends and hang out many times when there's not a club meeting. Everyone just move to Atlanta. We'll have a blast and the best damned model car club on the face of the planet!

Hm... well I can't say anything about your situation but here in Germany there aren't that many modellers, too. Most of them do R/C stuff or do the scale of 1/87, like customizing trucks and so on. But if you find a fellow kit-builder it comes really as a surprise sometimes!

A few days ago I was speaking with my english teacher from school. We had recently written something called the "Lernstandserhebungen", that was a test to see what the pupils know. I think it is similar to PISA but it is not international, only in some parts of Germany. Well, he told me that he read my test and there was a bit were you had to write something about your hobbies, of course I wrote about kit building , then he told me that he built kits when he was younger, too! Now he only collect 1/18 diecasts. His old built kits are stuffed away in his basement, he told me. I'd love to take a look at them. It really came as a surprise that he would do such a crazy and addicting thing as car modelling.

Ok! Be sure to invite Hiro, in fact, we an all pitch in for his rent if we can play with his model building toys. I mean, tools.

Ha! I think we've all been there, though, not is such a dire situation. You could write latex gloves off as a business expense, no?

Isn't that what AF is for? This place has certainly filled the void for me. I've come to be pretty good friends with a few people around here, albeit online friends. I guess you take them as you can get them - something you have to really be prepared for as most of the folks around these parts are pretty nuts. I enjoy very much the support, the sharing and the common interest among the folks here. I further enjoy access to far away hobby shops that this place can afford. I'm currently in a pretty good kit-trading arrangement with a fella in Asia.

But I do hear you, it's not quite the same as actually making it out to a contest or to scope people's models in person. I was really disappointed I didn't get to go to ATL this year for that reason. How hard have you looked where you are? Post a flyer on a board at school, or ask your LHS if you can't put one up there - perhaps there are a lot of people there sulking and moping that there's no others like them, and it just takes one to get it started!

You're in New Orleans!? I'm in Baton Rouge! Let's meet halfway and have a cold one.

No wait, halfway is in the swamp somehwere.

Atlanta is indeed close enough. Wanna share gas and wheel time for next November's NNL?

Re: Re: Re: Re: I am sad...

How about Northern NJ! Only person that is a bit close to me is BlownCivic1320. North NJ is full of RC people and not model car clubs or shops.

If only i lived in Atlanta
