Quick question about a S/C.
Would I be a complete fool to install a supercharger to an automatic car?

Not at all. The bottom line is that s/c's and turbos add torque. You'll notice more performance regardless of what transmission you have. If you are talking about racing, you might notice tiny tenths of a second differences between auto and manual, but on the street its just preference.
Make sure your auto tranny is up to the task of the added power. May I inquire what car/engine we're discussing?

Oh hell yeah! Thats what I wanted to hear. Thanks for the speedy reply.
The car I'm thinking about modding is a 1999 Toyota Solara (not the friendliest car to mod). I want to install a TRD supercharger, among many other upgrades. No worries, I plan on having the car's tranny, engine, etc, check out and brought up to speed before I add any perforance parts.

Foolish? Absolultely not! I recently did my `03 Tiburon 2.7L V6. I threw in an Alpine Stage1 Intercooled unit. The gains are well worh it. Take a look here!

deff worth it. Think of it this way, lets say a manual puts 170 WHP while the exact same car with an auto might put 165WHP, say the supercharger adds 40HP, expect the manual to make 210WHP while the auto will make 205WHP. But then with a auto, your shifts are faster and you build boost while changing gears, where as with a manual you lose boost everytime you change gears.

You don't build boost when you shift with a supercharger. That is with a turbo. You loose boost when you shift with a supercharger and you loose more with an automatic because an automatic's gears are further apart and the engine speed drops more.

no cause when you shift in an automatic, you dont stop accelerating. yes the gears are farther apart, but not some massive amount thats gonna meka a huge difference in your RPMS. But when you do shift, the automatic keeps feeding the engine gas and air at a WOT, while in a manual you have to let off the gas to shift.

a s/c will run off the engine speed. The engine doesn't lose so much rpm, between shifts, that it loses boost, especially at WOT, even in a stickshift. I can be from one gear to the next without losing 500 rpm until i start to let off the clutch again. The biggest difference between auto and stick, is with a turbo. In auto, your turbo will ALWAYS be under strain cause you can just hold the pedal tot he floor, where-as with a stick, no matter how fast you can shift, you still have to elt off the gas to shift it, thus losing all boost, unless you have a recirculator system.

It is true that the amount of boost drop will be insignificant with a positive displacement supercharger but with a centrifugal supercharger the boost drop is significant. I should have been more specific. I guess I should also state that this only applies to a factory automatic setup. A racing automatic setup with a loose torque convertor will not change as much engine speed during gear changes and therefore not loose very much boost. A centrifugal supercharger is best mated with a close geared manual gearbox or loose convertor automatic, and a turbo is best mated with an automatic.
