|
I have a question. or two
ok, im trying to learn everything about turbo chargers and forced induction systems but am a little bit confused about everything. Where does the wastegate bolt up onto?? like in this picture i know it mounts to the manifold after the turbine housing, but where does this second port connect to??
![]() And also, does anyone have a diagram on where all the lines hook up on the turbo, BOV, wastegate, ect... I dont need a scientific diagram or anything (unless you have one) even a good reference made on paint would help me out lol I also have searched google and this forum and still have come up mostly empty handed... THanks.

oh yeah and im not talking about the port right there on the manifold, im talking about the one on the side of the wastegate..

The wastegate is just hooked up with the exhaust system, or so has it an exhaust system of its own.

this does help, but im still unaware of the external wastegate. That pic does help but the fact that its using internal WG i am still confused...

The exhaust needs to split before the turbine. The one side goes to the turbine and the other side goes to the wastegate. After a certain boost is reached (referenced by a line to the compressor side) the wastegate opens allowing exhaust to bypass the turbine. Most wastegates dump the exhaust back into the original downpipe, but for max effort turbo-ing the wastegate should have its own exhaust.
I don't have any good pictures, but the wastegate is just a spring loaded pressure regulator. The pressure coming from the compressor side forces the spring open and opens the wastegate. By adjusting the spring tension, you adjust at what intake pressure the wastegate opens. The picture that SaabJohann posted shows an integral wastegate that is cast into the turbine housing. Again, fine for most systems but for max effort turbo power, better plumbing is afforded with an external wastegate. Your picture is of an external wastegate and there is no turbo currently on the manifold The port on the side of the wastegate in the picture you posted is the exhaust for the 'gate. That is the port the puts the exhaust back in the downpipe.

so lets say it had its own exhaust, would DEQ say anything about it putting out that pure exhaust straight out? lol, that a wierd question but...Yeah i understand how the internal wastegate works, but i am more suited towards getting an external. Thanks for the help...

I have also heard that it is a good idea to make sure the wastegated exhaust enters back into the exhaust at an angle. It helps prevent boost creep.

45* is usually a good round number. More is a plus. You just don't want to have any pressure from exhaust on that pipe. At an angle, you will get a little vacuum as well. It helps to avoid boost creep.

Note the Blow Off Valve recirculation too scenes how you plan to KA-T.

45 degrees is actually pushing it, IMO. More along the lines of 20 or so. Run the pipes next to each other, then just splice them in gently...if you can see it in your mind, it helps a lot more....
