automatic transmission for beetle

Dear All

On one hand , I happen to love the old Volkswagen beetle "the BUG" .On the other hand , I can only drive automatic transmission cars "never learned how to handle 3 pedals".

My question , is it possible to install automatic transmission on an old beetle? . My assumption is that it would be a major customization process. My other assumption is that I would need to replace the engine and the transmission module.

Any precedents ? , any suggestions about what engine to use? .

Thanx

Re: automatic transmission for beetle

you would have to get the transmission out of an automatic bus or type II, but it may not fit in the beetle engine bay.

Re: automatic transmission for beetle

VW had a manumatic for a while. That might bridge the gap for you.

Honestly though, the time, cost, and headache (in my tiny humble opinion) is ten times the undertaking that learning to drive a manual is. If you're really opposed to the idea or you're otherwise afraid to learn, then the automatic is the only way to go, but it takes even the worst driver only a few days to be competent with a manual. Also, once you've learned it never goes away and you'll wonder what you ever did before you had that knowledge Manuals are FUN!

Otherwise, you should be able to surf the VW forums and find some specific tech on the subject.
