Rear axel strength

Just a general question. All the 4x4 mags talk about are jeeps and big trucks and strengthing the axel housing, drive shaft and the diff.

How does the factory Nissan rear end compare to the Dana's and Ford 9" and all the other stuff they mention?

Just trying to get a feel for how the X compares to aftermarket replacement parts mention in the mags.

It's about as tough as a Dana 44 with a Ford 9" ring gear.

Aussie,

It is pretty tough. The Advanced Driveline guys couldn't believe the dif was out of a Nissan. He said it is as stout as a 9".

And the reason the Jeeps need to upgrade the axles and diff is because they're engines put out 270+ HP and turn 38" tires.

The axles become the weak link.

Front diff

I remember my 4x4 'wrench' commenting on how strong the front differential looked when he installed the ARB.

Just think we could have a 31 spline H233B up front, I would love to go to an Aussie junkyard...

With the R200A (front diff) the weak link isn't the diff, it is the drive axles. The CV joints don't hold up well in any IFS under duress. They are basically front wheel drive automobile parts although a little stronger than that. They also don't take well to to stiff angles. That's one of the reasons I chose the SLR kit. It may not drop the diff a lot, but it is better than nothing. Especially when lockers and larger tires are factored in.

Speaking of Nissans with solid front axles.... There is a Patrol up for the Four Wheeler top truck challenge. I ordinarily wouldn't give a shit about the TTC, but I think I mmight actually send in my votes so that I can vote in the Aussie! He is running stock axles with ARB's and 38's powered by I believe a small block chevy.

Sure is to bad the Patrol isn't available here, or for that matter half the trucks available down under.

Saw that too, says his sponsors will get him over if he gets the votes.

Another guy has an old Datsun truck body on a custom frame and driveline setup.
