Re: gt cobra engine swap

why not just charge the gt? the performance of the basic cobra engine isnt all that flattering. i dont htink it would be worth the hastle... youd make more power w/ a charger anyways plus it owuld be easier and cheaper.

i just basically wanted to get 600 hp out of my engine and i just figured if i was gonna take the engine out anyways the cobra engine would handle the horsepower better. you have any mods that would get me atleast close to 500hp?

Re: gt cobra engine swap

one word for ya...turbo. the modular blocks (your block) is aluminum and can take alot more abuse than the older 5.0 cast iron blocks... if im not mistaken, which happens alot, the gt and the cobra have the same block only the cobra's got more modified parts.

Back to the advantages disadvantages of the 4.6 vs 5.0 question. The 5.0 and the GT 4.6 both are close to there limit stock around 500hp but each for a different reason.

The 5.0 blocks main webbing is weak and is pushed to it's limits around 500hp the 4.6 cast iron block(96-04GT's and 03-04 Cobras) is a almost perfect(long stroke big bore grrr) it's strength is there for 1000+hp but the problem with 96-04 GT 4.6 is the internals like to puke much above 500hp.

A cast iron 4.6 with any year 4.6 Cobra crank, forge rods and pistons will be a very stout beast ready for some serious hp. I would stay away from the aluminium blocks unless you have some big bucks cause boring and sleeving an aluminium block for more strength is not a cheap proposition.
