PROGRESS Project '04 Cobra

I think by now it's obvious I have no life, as all the progress threads I'm posting right now are of the stuff I've done in the last week alone. Anyways, about this build, Revell dissapointed me so much with their failure to release a Mustang newer than the '99 Cobra, after all the wonderful cars Ford's come out with since then. I was so disappointed, in fact, that I decided the only way to deal with it would be to build my own. Take that, Revell. Here's my custom 99->03 Cobra build so far:

What I started with:

What I had to end up with:

Through some miracle, the '98 Saleen hood fit well enough to be considered as a doner. So, on with the putty party! (Also note the reference pictures, I'm a stickler for accuracy!)

There's putty everywhere!!

Driver's side and hood are pretty much done:

Now if only I knew what color to paint it!!!

Awesome conversion! The front bumper looks so close! I made this same model(red) and I never thought about modifying the bumper. You rock!
http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=249702
Are you going to modify the side skirts, rear bumper and add the little tail spoiler?
Suggestion: Paint it yellow or comp orange to show-off the new body mods!
What kind of wheels to duplicate the '03s??

I'm using Model Masters Red Putty. It is messy, but it's really easy to sand, sands smooth, and well, it's cheap.

I've already started on the C-scoops, I'm working my way back on this car. I did fill in the rear bumper where it says "Mustang," I don't think I could carve out the word Cobra...that would just be insane. I'll figure something out. Spoiler's next, after the C-scoops are done. When I finish, and it's painted, you will not be able to tell that it was once a 99. I promise.

Now I'm in trouble.

About wheels, I thought Maisto made a 1:24 Cobra I could rob the wheels off of, but all I've been able to find are the 1:18s so far. I'll keep looking.

It would certainly be a lot easier to build a Bullitt, that's for sure.

I'm already set on doing a factory color; it's a 100% factory build. Well, except for the transmission....which I just may cut out of my Camaro model....nah. That's just crazy.

It's actually inset into the bumper, and stock is unpainted, like it originally was. The '99 is the only Cobra to not say "Cobra" on the rear bumper; Ford had ordered the bumpers, they weren't ready by their release date, so they just sold the 99's with "Mustang" rear bumpers. It's a shame Revell didn't build a 2001 Cobra, then I wouldn't have this problem. I'm probaby going to make a decal for it, unless I can find a way to do it in chrome. Some aftermarket companies make inserts for the rear bumpers of these cars, and my favorite inserts are made of polished stainless steel. We'll see what I can pull off!

Through some kind of miracle, a friend of mine back home decided to paint his race car Screamin' Yellow and there's a chance I'll be able to shoot a few coats of factory Ford paint on this Cobra! Guess that answers the question of what color this thing is getting painted!

Re: PROGRESS Project '04 Cobra

That should look nice. 1:24 just look nice when they are painted with factory colors. I'm curious to see which project you will finish first (2 Mustangs and a Lightning); more pics would be appreciated, but if you don't have any I guess we can wait!

Re: PROGRESS Project '04 Cobra

Yes, Maisto make a 1:24 diecast cobra. I believe you can get the "Assembly line" (the one you put together) If the bumper on the diecast is recessed with the word "COBRA" on it, then take a little liquid latex, and brush a light coat on it to take a mold. Then just cast a copy in resin. The hard part will be lining it up right and puttying it all smooth.
Just a though!!

John
