changing car seats to leather

Hey everybody! Well you see, I want leather seats, but sometimes, the car I want doesn't have them (used of course), so I was wondering if it was possible to take out the car seats and put in new ones.

A few questions...

Do the seats put in have to be specifically for the car?
About how much do you think this would cost?

Also note that I want leather seats, not just covers.

Thanks a bunch!

sorry but all leather seats are basicly covers.they cover the foam!!!
you can have a shop cover your stock seats in leather they will take of the old material and make an outerskin(seatcover)in leather and put it on ..dont worry it wont look like a cheap seat cover

Mospeed is correct. I work at an upholstery shop. All seats have an outerskin cover, not like a cheap shucks/baxter cover. This cover is attatched the the seat via hog rings and listing. To re-wrap the seat, a shop will remove your stock cover, rip the seams apart until the cover is just the pieces and is no long sewn toghter.

They will then use the pieces as a pattern to make new pieces out of te new material (leather in your case). They will then back the apperperiate pieces, and start sewing hte cover back toghter in the reverse order it was taken apart. When it's all sewed toghter, the listing is sewed back on, an the seat will then be re-wrapped onto the foam (with is whats under most seats, german cars use this weird moss type structure, not foam. The the cover will be hog ringed down as it is wrapped. You now have a leather seat.

no the seats dont have to be for the car, if you want to put camaro seats in a mustang, be my guest. i just installed racing seats in my 74 camaro and i had to drill new holes in the floor. makes sure its all centered. sometime you can take the old tracks off the old seats and put them on your new seats. this way you can use the same holes. i found out when i put my racing seats in, that the old holes were in a thicker part of the floor boad. where i drilled the new ones. it was pretty thin. i dont like the idea of the b/c is something happens, the seat could rip up and nothing holding me in. so i am going to take a piece of flat 2"x1/4" x 16" steel, drill out the the holes and mount them under the car on each side of the seats. so this way there just not a 3/4 nut and washer holding me to the seat. if you have this promblem, beef it up underneth, noone looks under there and this way you will be safe. what kinda of car do you have? and for the seats, leather is alot of money. i was going to get my seats for my mustand done in vinly and i was going to cost about 800 for the front to seats and rear seat. leather in a bit more. check out tunerfx seats, used to be called driverFX. they have nice seats for a great price. good luck
