gif sigs/avitars

I've noticed more and more gif style signatures and avitars where it is several images making a mini animation.

I am on broadband and I've really niticed things slowing down so I hate to think what it's like for dial up users!!!!!!!

I know it's not my pc as other sites with normal jpeg pictures are fine and quickly load up.

I think there should be some kind of control or maybe even a total ban on animated sigs and avitars. There seem to be quite a lot in the modelling section where people seem to make new ones to out do each other.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: gif sigs/avitars

I'm on a dial up at night and I haven't noticed any problems.
You sure it's not your ISP or something like that?

Maybe you are one of the lucky ones freakray, but I'm on Cable/Broadband at home and a T1 at work and I still see it slow down the moment I scroll down to the members post that has an animated sig. Very Annoying.

I don't have DSL and I don't find problems with animated avs/sigs. Just the servers really, but that is bareable.

Usually the people that have signatures with large gif files I will PM them, or remove it within 24hours I sent the PM.

Re: gif sigs/avitars

I don't have DSL either and I don't find problems with animated avatars or sigs. When im on some sites like cardomain, its harder for me to upload them, but it is possible.

If your connection is slow then turn off viewing signatures.

Re: gif sigs/avitars

I have a GIF avatar, but its very small file size, even smaller than some of the regular jpg avatars I'v seen. I'm on dailup and have only had problems with a couple peoples that were like 1 meg gif files.

Re: gif sigs/avitars

the problem is... how are you going to stop it? most of the signatures are actually located on another site. Perhaps the problem is wherever the image actually is has a slow server. But still all of the text will load when you look at a thread.....

Huge images I can see being a problem but as far as it being slow..... just listen to Yogs.

Re: gif sigs/avitars

There is a size limit on Avarars, its impossible to having anything bigger than I think 100k, or 100x100pixels.

Even a thread full of 10 differnt animated avatars will not slow down a dail up connection. If it does then you need a new ISP.

Signitures are another matter.
There are guidelines in use and moderators have the ablity to edit any members signiture.
If you find that is abnormaly large then PM the closest mod, or use the report post feature and it will be delt with

And of course if you do have a really slow connection, there is the ablity to turn off sig viewing.

Re: gif sigs/avitars

I think that my3rdskyline's avatar is just a little too big. Can anything be done to make those smaller? I have a 6.6 mbps connection here, but the problem is that with a 1024x768 resolution it takes too long to scroll
