Le Mans Contest Entry - Progress: Sauber Mercedes C9

Hello everyone,

This is my first thread and kit ever posted in AF. It's the SAuber Mercedes C9. Before building it, I thought about detailing and then changed my mind. With the engine built, changed my mind again and I'm trying to figure our how to detail this great kit It will also be a test bank for some new techniques, like CF decals and putty. I'm quite new at modeling, so I've never tried these before.

Anyway, here are some photos:

Everything in it's right place:

This was the current state of the kit until I decided to un-glue the parts on the cockpit in order to do a better paint job on them.

And this is what I'm currently working on:

For some reason, Tamiya decided to do these air intakes in separate pieces from the body. Every single photo I've seen of the car shows them as part of the body, so I'm trying to do that. It's my first putty job and it still looks like crap, and lots of sanding is still required. Hope I can do a good job with it because I really like this car

Guess that's all for now! Cheers!

Re: Progress: Yet another Sauber MErcedes C9

I built this car a while ago, looks like you've made a good start. Which version are you building, #61, #62 or #63?

Spitfire: I still haven't decided on hte version I'll build. I'll be letting those decisions to latter parts of the build Are there any significative diferences I should be aware of, during the buildup, beside the number?

GvEman: No, unfortunately, I'm not from Sweden . I was in Sweden 4 years ago as an Erasmus student and and fell in love with your country. I was in Lund for about 4 months. "Real" was a nickname I used and I added Sweden at the time and since then I've been using it everywhere

Hopefully, I'll emigrate to Sweden in a few years

Thanks for your comments!

The obvious difference is that the #61 had red mirrors, the #62 had white mirrors and the #63 had yellow mirrors, it should say this in the instructions. I built the #63, which won the 1989 Le Mans 24hrs. The #61 came second and the #62 came fifth in the race. You might be also interested in building the #63 version, as Swedish driver Stanley Dickens was one of the drivers.

As you can tell i really did my research before i built it.

Looks great! I can sense your stress with the putty. My advice to you is put the putty over the seam with some excess(putty shrinks). Then get yourself one of them nail files(or metal files) and sand it smooth. Then finish it off with 800-1500 grit. Good luck!

Little update:

Sanded off some of the irregularities of the air intakes. Had to add some more putty, and then sand it off again until I got to a reasonable finish. The photo shows the front just after the aplication of some grey primer in order to check for irregularities (which are already showing off, on the right intake)

thanks everyone!

Re: Progress: Yet another Sauber MErcedes C9

Cool, another Sauber/Merc. If you want a change from the silver, there are a few aftermarket decal schemes for this car about. The fabulous 1988 circuit board livery amongst them. Although there were differences in the engine compared to the 1989 car and probably more besides.

Also, on the 1989 Le Mans cars one of them had a different front section, squared off instead of curved, can’t remember which one. Do a search for some of the cars already built here, I recall the details were discussed.

Hey, looks really good already. You're almost there with the air intakes. Very nice touch. Another tip, the plate that covers the nose section, needs to be puttied as well, all the way around. with many build C9's this is quite often a forgotten thing I for one did that, but forgot to do the air intakes properly...

See one of the pictures on my ref page to know what I mean.

Good luck with the proceedings!

Hi Huudo

I've known your photos for a long time In fact, I think we talked once via MSN. I had already noticed that the plate should also be puttied, but I'm trying to get there intakes right before doing it. Thanks for the warning, anyway

See ya

man..why did you had to mention this scheme... Now I'll have to buy it... And since I like the original scheme too, that means I'll probaly have to buy another Sauber... By the way, I'll probably want to buy SMS's photoecthed detail set as well... The problem is... I can't afford them, right now!!!

thanks for making my life miserable

Cheers!
