4.0 stalls intermittantly, but starts right up

My 94 Cherokee Sport, 4.0 4WD with 165,000+ miles has developed an intermittant desire to shut down. Just stalls, fact is with the radio on, you don't realize it's stalled until you step on the gas or try and turn the wheel. Slide it into nuetral and it starts right up, no problem. Seems to happen after you've braked/slowed down and then begin to accelerate. Never a problem starting, and the stalling has no pattern, other than it happens when the vehicle being operated, and not just sitting in the driveway. I've read many threads, and am wondering if changing the coil is my starting point? Any thoughts will be appreciated, really hate to chase this, and hoping someone has had similar problems, and could maybe point me to a beginning point. Thanx

Hard to say without knowing if it's a fuel or electrical problem.

Try giving it a good tune up. Change the fuel filter, cap, rotor. Check all of the connectors for the various sensors (CPS, TPS, etc.).

Herb D,
I am having the exact same problem and was wandering if you fixed it.
I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil, plugs and wires - and it seems to not do it as often but I am still not satisfied.
If anyone else has some input I would love to hear it.

I am still trying. Got as far as checking connections, when it stalled again, while driving, and this time the starter wouldn't even turn over. Had all the electrics though. After a period I got it started, took it to the garage, where they found a bad ground, and fixed that. Two days later same senerio, had it towed this time. Next AM it started right off for them(Garage). All the checks and such and they have not been able to get an indicated fault/problem or make it fail again. I'm still trying, if I come across anything, I'll let you know. I do believe I have two problems, maybe a bad spot on the starter, and then whatever is causing the stall.

Herb, try checking the ccv system , ie the lines running out of the top of the valve cover to make sure they are clear, had this problem and finally found these lines were full of oill and oil residue, once taken off, cleaned out and reinstalled no more problem,,hope this helps

sounds like you may have a crankshaft position sensor going bad on you. if you have some one with you the next time it stalls on you and it is safe and convient for you. pull the coil wire from the distributor cap hold close to a ground or lay on engine somewhere it will ground. Turn engine over see if you have spark at coil wire. I know it doesn't always happen that way, if possible. does engine light come on

My jeep does much the same,
it starts right up almost all the time,
but then later just dies, with no sputtering, sometimes i also dont notice its stalled till i go to speed up or stop.
but mine seems to be much more....problematic...
its been doing it on and off for the last couple weeks, and last week at work i almost couldnt get it home, it usually dies 2 or three times on the way to and from work, bbut if i wait a minute or so it starts up again but last time it was dying every 30 seconds toa minute for the first 10 mins, but after that it startede getting better and eventually it drove the last 10 miles home without dying at all.
it usally gets better the longer i drive it untill it dosent stall at all..
im at a loss

(forgot to mention its a 93 cherokee sport.)

4.0 Stalls...

I've been having stall problems on the 4.0 (Throttle body fuel injected straight six) in my 88 Cherokee as well. It has a standard transmission. If I start the car cold and allow it to idle, it will idle without fault for as long as I don't try to alter engine speed via the throttle. If I increase engine speed and allow the throttle to snap back down to curb idle, it'll faulter and stall. Same with a decelaration (downshift) to a stop sign.
I was told by a garage that it was caused by a vacuum leak. I also noticed in the manual, they list one of the controls on the throttle body to be some kind of idle control module. Have you checked that?
The garage that told me my problem was vacuum has the vehicle now to prove their diagnosis. (Is a a throttle body fuel injected engine considered to be "Naturally Aspirated"? Should I expect between 19 and 21 inches of mercury?)
Anywho, if and when the garage figures out that particular problem, I'll post it here...

im not shure if this help but i have an 89 4.0 cherooke with auto transmision, here is my history:
when i was driving about 35-40 mph, and turn right, the motor stops, so i need to place in neutral and start it again with no problems, after a lot of shecks (electrical and mechanical) i found that the fuel pump (still give a good gas pressure) had a bad internal check valve and it loose the gas back to the tank. i replaced the complete pump system (the check valve is inside the pump) and solve the problem
