Starts, Stall Quickly.......

Please Help, I have a 1988 Jeep cherokee, 4.0 ltre, 5 spd. I went to the store the other day then got in my jeep and tried to start it. It started then stalled right away. I tried giving it gas and everything. Nothing mattered. It still would start everytime but then stall. I had it towed home then wanted to blow it up but decided to try and start it. It started right up. I drove it for 2 days then all of a sudden on the highway it died. Same problem, starts then stalls. Does anyone out there have any clue what the hell is wrong? Please Help Me.

I had the same problem on a 89 cherokee, turned out to be one of the four relays on the passenger side front fender, you can switch them around till it starts and runs, then you will know which one was bad.

the idea of relays should work if it is for the fuel pump, or may also be the pump itself

Gonecruzan, First of all did you run your jeep out of fuel? If you did you may have burn up your fuel pump. To eliminate probable causes try these methods, unhook the fuel line before the fuel filter, turn key on "don't crank" check to see if fuel is coming out, then check to see if fuel is coming out of the fuel filter. If fuel is coming out! put fuel a pressure tester on the fuel rail to see if it is getting the right amount of psi.

a possible solution to your stalling problems....worked for me

i had a problem yesterday where my jeep ('96 cherokee automatic with the 4.0 inline 6) had stalled when i was slowing down at a stop sign, and wouldnt start again. i tried everything and would crank, but i wouldnt turn over. a shot of ether got it to turn over, but it stalled right out again. after an hour or so of working on it and getting a mechanics help, i decided to just have it towed to a friends garage, where i had just changed the head gasket, radiator, rotor and cap, put new plugs in, new fuel filter, a new piston, and a new oil pan. while i was waiting for it to be towed, i figured i try starting it again, and it started right up, first try. i drove it all the way to the garage across town, and it didnt stall until shifting into reverse to park. looking at it today with the mechanics, no one could figure out why i would run great for intermittent amounts of time, then simply stall (no sputtering or anything). i might run for 1 minute or 20 minutes. we had tried most of the things that others suggested in this thread, but nothing worked. finally one of the mechanics told me to spray a little gum cutter in the intake. so i took the hose coming from the air filter off and i started it up, and as luck would have it, it was wanting to stall out again while trying to do this, so kept it running with the gas while my dad sprayed the gum cutter right into the intake in the throttle body. there wasnt much left in the can so you dont need to use much, or at least we didnt. the gum cutter must have gotten rid of some crap the ay have been on the injectors or somewhere that was killing the motor. its hard to figure it all out when it stalled out after random amounts of time, but at low rpm's. something must have been dirty and the gum cutter took care of it. this really has worked great so far. it hasnt stalled once since we did that, and it had been running for about a 45 ish minutes after that (about 10 minutes driving, and probly 30 idling). so definately give this a shot if your having stalling issues.

also, could someone tell me about what temperature your jeep runs at?? mines runnin up around 210-220, whioch seems too hot, especially considering its almost december. it has a pretty new 195 thermostat in it, and a water pump thats about the same age (probly between 6-10 months old).

thanks a lot and i hope the gum cutter thing works as good for you as i has so far for me.

nevermind

well i thought that the gum cutter fixed my problem but apparently not. i used the jeep the day after i sprayed it and it was perfect, but that night, i had the same problems again. i put a noid tester (and LED light that plugs into the injector wires that lights up when the engine sends a signal to that injector to...uhhh inject) on the first injector. i tried to start it, and i fired right after the light came on and went off when i turned the key on. i let it run at an idle for as long as possible before it stalled, but i noticed that it would only stall when the pattern of flashing from the LED stopped. as soon as it stopped flashing, the engine shut right off. then, for the times that it wouldnt start again, the light would not come on when i turned the key on. (light shuts off, motor stalls; turn the key on and no flash, motor wont turn over). so the conclusion ive come up with along with my mechanics is that the signal to injector is being interrupted, and that the most likely cause is the crankshaft position sensor. i got one last night and was going to put it on but the store gave me the wrong one so i have to get another today...hopefully this fixes the stalling problem...i let ya know

Cool cps

hey i think the crank position sensor fixed the stalling problem. i changed it almost a week ago and havent had a problem since. ive been doing everything i could think of that it had been doing the last times i had the problem, and everythings perfect. i would definately suggest changing that sensor. its cheap and not too tough (its reaching it that sucks, but its only 2 bolts). good luck and hope this helped.

check this out for cps changing info:
