Please tell me your joking...first of all you might consider reading your thread that you already started about this problem

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=277593

beyond that if you want it quieter you either need to put the stock cat and or midpipe back in.......or you could just keep it under 3000 rmp

I'm really just messing with you but it's not going to get any quieter without spend money...just for the record i don't know where your from and the noise regulations but it's pretty hard to get cited for a loud exhaust where i live...i think the maximum it 90dB at 100 feet, which would actually require a dB meter which cops don't carry around and even if your car is over that it's only when it's under load so if a cop wanted you to sit there and rev it for him it wouldn't be over that anyway.

p.s. just read that you were from cali so they are a little more hardcore there cutting out a section from the midpipe and adding in a silencer would be your best bet if you don't want to put a stock cat back in

Re: 1997 accord too loud

just buy a muffler with a removable silencer. The silencer will drop the dbs quite a bit.

First off, 3 inch pipe is too large for a 4 banger. You'll loose your low end.

2nd. Did you omit the mid-muffler. If so, put it back. That will reduce a lot of the noise exiting the car.

If you still have the mid-muffler, my only suggestion is to replace the muffler or go to a 2 inch or 2.5 inch pipe

Re: 1997 accord too loud

In california the decibal level is 90db 3 feet away at a 45 degree angle i think... Yeah he is right a 3 inch pipe is way to much for your car i like my 2 catback! or just by a silencer like the guy said

Another little Cali Tidbit. Your exhaust doesn't have to be over 90db to get cited for a violation. CHP especially like to pull over imports with loud/louder than normal exhausts and then cite them for having a "Modified Exhaust" There is no noise reading required for this and it's non-fightable. You pay 10 dollars and have a CHP officer or Smog Official sign off once you make the exhaust quieter. I had to put a Glass Pack (yes I said Glass Pack) into my exhaust to quiet it down enough for CHP to sign off on it.

Actually, you're simply replacing your exhaust with another one. There's no law stating you have to repair your car with OEM parts. If there were, companies like Pep Boys, Strauss, & Autozone would be out of business.

In the state of California (which is a strict state with exhaust & emissions) The California Vehicle Code (27151) requires your exhaust to be at a maximum of 95db. Anything below that is considered legal. EVEN an exhaust that has been modified.
The best thing I can suggest is to get a decibel meter to carry around in your car. They're around $60 but well worth the money. This way you can show the cop how loud your exhaust really is. Remember, the law goes by an actual db reading, not by how loud the officer thinks your exhaust is.

OR

Buy an exhaust (specifically for your car) that has been tested by the manufacturer. DC Sports, GReddy, Tanabe, etc. I'm sure those companies have dumped tons of money into making sure you don't get busted for an exhaust that's legal.

Actually, the CHP officer that wrote me up pulled out his Vehicle Code Book and showed me the two different violations. This new law is different than the old decible one. You exhaust just has to be deemed loud/obnoxious by the officer writing the ticket and be "Moddified" for them to write you up. The officer that signed off on my ticket didn't even give me a decible reading. Just asked what I did to make it quieter, had me turn the car on, and rev the motor. That's it. I will try and find the code on the California website.

That's not right nor do I think it's legal. He's simply giving his OPINION which as we all know can vary depending upon the person. That's why we have rules/regulations that we must abide by. Just because the officer may think your exhaust is loud doesn't mean it's illegal. If that's the case, motorcycles, especially choppers & Harleys would be totally illegal.
