the sub is sum MTX in a crate, and the amp is a 160x1 (i think) rockford fosgate. its nothing special, but it worked for me (while it lasted)

As with most anything electical, give the a burn it time... 10-15 minutes at 1/2 power before banging the hell out of them.
Anytime we test sample products, we give them a burn in time before we abuse them.

very true... if your surrouns hasn't gotten used to moving.. if you just start slamming your subs. the surround may get fuct up....
also the wiring might be the problem too. |

well usually i wire my stuff up with the amp set on minimum everything, then tune it up to the sound i want, by the time i get it tuned the break in is over. that rockford amp could have been too much for it, the older rockford amps are notorious for putting out WAY more power than theyre rated. what model mtx was it?

here's how it goes
First off, i'm almost sure the wiring is alright because i had 4 differant sources check it (one was the rival of the store that installed it). The sub was an open box buy
and the model is MTX Thunder 4000. This is what happened.I woke up started my car (it was a hella cold morning) and put down the windows and started bumping at the volume set at 65 (it goes to 80). Every morning though, the sound always skips when it's hekka loud. Even when I'm standing still and not monving, everything skips. But if it's the afternoon and it's not cold or anything, everything is fine and it will only skip over a big bump (no problem there). So like, why does it skip on cold ass mornings right when I'm starting my car? When it blew I was in the parking lot at skool and it just lost all bass and got very quiet. Should I not play them loud in the mornings when the car is not warmed up? I realli dont kno much about sound systems, but I realli like bumping loud it sucks now, i feel hekka naked without my subs...

i bet that amp was too much for the sub. if it was a 6000 itd be different. but i could be wrong. have u ever sat and watched the sub play to see if it was overextending?

hmmmm. what is this skipping thing? all i know is my friends subs after a year would tend to play bad with a skipping type sound where the subs would cut off and on really quickly.. eventually his sub fried too.
i found out the sub is svc and the amp is 4 ohm... it would be hard to mess that up now.. sounds like it blew.. i don't know much about mtx but i hear they ain't good stuff. JL subs are good |

this skipping sound, is it like a click click sound like small pieces of metal tapping? if so thats the voice coil tapping, and the amp is too powerful and needs to be turned down.

The "skipping" sound that you are inferring to sounds like clipping. Clipping occurs when DC voltage is sent to your speakers. DC voltage will mutilate even the highest quality speaker in very short times. You need to have the installing shop check out this problem and resolve it.
