heh... i just swapped a pioneer head unit i had lying around into my 89... removing the stock radio was the hardest part by far. i tried the factory method, which didn't work. in fact, it got me so frustrated i ended up destroying it. i'm a little upset with myself, since i could have sold it, but now the job is done and my cd player works flawlessly. looks pretty damn good too. i had to drill 4 holes in the stock console for phillips head screws to mount the aftermarket bezel, and i like the look it created.

what ended up happening was, i put the car in first gear (auto) and literally kicked the stock unit in until the mounts broke. unfortunately it destroyed the front cover of the radio. oh well, that's life. i can only hope i have enough control over myself as to not break anything that has REAL ebay value in the future.

Re: stock radio

i dont know if yours is the same as my sn94 but w/ mine ive got 4 holes on each corner of the stereo, and you have to buy this "contraption" that pushes the 4 buttons inside the holes at the same time and releases it...i guess its some kind of theft security thing. or you could do it the i dont give a shit way and just hammer 4 nail into the holes to push the buttons
(thats what i did)...

Guys you can get the tool to push in the four holes for like a dollar at a good stereo place.

Factory Radio removal

Actully, if you are too broke to buy the $1.00 tool like GTStang suggested, you can remove the entire radio bezel/and A/C vent leaving the radio inside it...when you get it pulled out enough to get your fingers on both sides of the radio, just push in on the small plates at the front...the radio will easily slide out then...

If at first you don't succeed, smash..smash until you do.
