guys, really need your help......
I'm driving a 94 2.2 camry, in recent days i am having some wired problems. 1. at cold start, it is normal and techo drops from 1400 to 800 as temp rise, but sometimes the tacho will all sudden rise to 1900 and run for a while then back to 800 2. when driving , at the red light, i was at a full stop, then the engine will slow down and stop, then a big headache, i can not start!!! it seems the starter is ok, it is cranking and gas smell come out from the exhaust, but cann't start, after trying for 4-6 times, it will start...... that also happens when I stopped the car for a while like 40 mins, then cann't start 3. sometimes at the start, if i insert the key in and start the engine right away before the beeping stopped, engine seems hard to start, it chokes barely run and the tacho rise a little bit like 300 or 400, then either stop or a success start Thanks guys , all comments are welcomed!!!! joe |

Re: hard to start,
Are you getting a "Check Engine" light on your instrument panel that stays on when the car is running?

yeah, that is also a funny problem, I dont have any feedback from sensors, no check engine light on.

Re: hard to start,
Your #1 Makes it sound like a sensor problem, like the coolant temperature sensor is bad - where the engine thinks it is cold. Could be many things though.
Your #2 makes it sound like an ignition problem, but could also be a coolant temperature sensor telling the computer your engine is cold (when it is not) and giving you too rich a mixture, or a fuel pump problem. Your #3 could be a fuel pump or filter, but is easly avoided by not starting the car until the beeping stops. See if it persists after you solve your stalling and surging problems. Re: hard to start,
Some other possibilities are an intake air leak, bad gas in your tank, bad distributor cap, rotor, wires, vacuum leak in hoses or intake manifold.

Re: hard to start,
i found a crack on the tube connecting the air cleaner and throttle, the crack in on the throttle side, will it be a problem? or, how can i check the vacuum leak? where are those sensors located.....mhh sorry i have so manyyyyy questions, thank you very much

Re: hard to start,
The coolant temperature sensor is the gadget closest to the engine on the metal pipe connected to the upper radiator hose. Check its resistance cold and hot. When the engine is cold, the resistance of the sensor (remove the connector) should be around 1-2kOhms. When the engine is at normal operating temperature, the resistance should be around 0.1-0.15 kOhms. If it is greatly different than that, replace it.
Get a Chiltons or Haynes manual to get details on sensor location. If you really want all the details, get the Toyota Service Manual for you car. The tube connecting your air cleaner and throttle body should not have any cracks that can leak air. If it does, replace it. Consider cleaning your throttle body also. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...throttle_body/ Check for vacuum leaks by looking at all the small and medium size hoses carefully and seeing if there are any cracks or are the ends loose on the fittings. Replace them if they are quesionable. |

but she still stalls at the red light, now i am confused, help!!!!!!!!! |

Re: hard to start,
Do the ignition checks and check your fuel supply (pump, pressure regulator)

Re: hard to start,
i also noticed that intermittently, when car is running, if i step on the gas, the tacho will drop by 200 or more rpms and then go up, this is frightening.
really appreciate your help, Brian. |

Is your ignition system perfect and your fuel supply adequate?

Check the EGR valve. When this sticks, and doesn't operate smoothly, it can cause the problems you're experiencing. It's a little vacuume operated valve that brings some exhaust gasses from the exhaust manifold back into the throttle body. It only is supposed to operate when the engine is warm, and when it's running at a moderate RPM.
Check this link: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=281662 There's quite a few discussions at this forum that refer to the EGR valve. Simply do a search above using the search term "camry egr" without the quotations. |
