88 Carmry stumbling and stalls

Hello, I have a 88 Camry 4 cyl auto, this car has a intermittent stumbling and stalling problem when stopped and then accellerating. When I lightly step on the gas pedal it will go and not stumble as bad. No engine light on, I have changed the fuel filter, sparkplugs, wires and dist. cap/rotor, it will be ok for a week and then comes back. Brought it to a shop and they can't find the problem. This seems to be a common problem on Carmrys. Mass airflow sensor, O2 sensor, egr any ideas ? Need your help please. Thx.

Re: 88 Carmry stumbling and stalls

Check your EGR value, should be Closed at idle & low RPMs.... You can feel the diaphram from bottom side, as you rive the engine up (hot engine) you should feel the diaphram & shaft move.... Check all your vacuum hoses around the EGR.... Be careful & not burn your feeling finger....

I went out and bought a Haynes manual, checked the egr operation like you described and it works ok, also removed and cleaned the egr vacuum modulator and egr, both looks fine. Did some test with the vacuum gauge and did'nt find anything wrong as per the manual. After went for a test drive and the stumbling/hesitation started again, as I drove hard it cleared up.
Came home and checked the resistance on the air flow meter, readings are with-in the manual except when bench testing between terminals E2-VS the resistance is NOT in limits, when moving the plate/flapper it was reading 335 ohms fully closed and 68 fully open, the manual reads 200-1200 ohms. Could this be the problem??

possible diagnosis

I had a very similar problem with my '92 Camry. It kept stalling when I was stopped, but never when I was accelerating. I brought it to two mechanics who found other problems to fix, but it still stalled. I finally brought it to the Toyota dealership. The problem was either with the vacuum circulating valve or the exhaust gas recirculating valve. They replaced both and I haven't had a problem since.
