The first kit that came about for the Tiburon GT was the Alpine Developments kit. It uses a Eaton M63 3rd gen "roots type" blower. www.nxtgenmotorsports.com sells the kit with some of their parts making a 250whp and 212lb/ft of torque. The kit price is $4920.00. Not bad considering it come with lots of extras and an intercooler.
The Roots type supercharger is a positive displacement type device that operates by pulling air through a pair of meshing lobes not dissimilar to a set of stretched gears. Air is trapped in pockets between the lobes and carried between the intake side to the exhaust. The supercharger is typically driven directly from the engine's crankshaft via a belt. In order for the supercharger to deliver air at greater pressure than atmospheric, the Roots supercharger must be geared so that it turns faster than the engine. Out of the three basic supercharger types the Roots is considered the least efficient. However, it is also widely used and thus is invariably the most cost efficient. Much work has been done to improve the efficiency of the Roots type supercharger, but because it does not have internal compression it will never have the same potential as the centrifugal type supercharger. The second kit to come out was the Ripp Mods supercharger. It uses a Vortech V5 G-trim "centrifugal type" supercharger. www.rippmods.com sells this kit with some of their parts making 310whp and 250lb/ft of torque. I believe that was at 8-9 lbs of boost with their intercooler. I think their final product is sold at 5lb and the intercooler is an option. The kit price is $3849.95. Not bad considering the hp and torque levels that can be acomplished. The centrifugal type supercharger is practically identical in operation to a turbocharger, with the exception that instead of exhaust gasses driving an impeller, there is only a compressor housing, and that is driven from the crankshaft via a drive belt. As such the centrifugal exhibits the same benefits and down-sides. Boost increases with the square of RPM (unlike the linear nature of the positive displacement devices), however low-rpm boost suffers due to the fact that air can pass back through the supercharger with little restriction until RPMs rise sufficiently to counteract the effect. Of all the belt-driven supercharger types this type exhibits the highest efficiciency, and due to its design and lack of low-down boost is often employed on near standard compression engines. The Roots type supercharger, however, produce low-rpm boost and as such feel far more reactive on the road. If your thinking of going with a supercharger both of these companies are highly regarded and produce great products. If buying these kits remember to get a better clutch (I recomend centerforce) and a good limited slip diff. (I hear roadrace motorsports sells one). I have also heard the roots type supercharges can be more noised and sometimes create a whistling sound. Just adding this because I'm sure someone will ask:
These are only for the 03-04 GT models (the V6). Alpine Dev. does make a supercharger kit for the V4s, but it's not worth it. The gains aren't that much. Instead, I'd suggest going tubro. I'm going to make a turbo thread for all us V4'ers. Check back soon. |

Does anyone have any info on the install of these kits? Like how easy or hard they are to install. Any feedback about how well they perform and sound. Thanks

... the alpine kit... will take about 9 hours...
the ripp kit will take about 10-12 it all depends on how well you knwo your engine and tools |
