The problem is called dieseling and it is usually caused by your timing being off. Try setting your timing agian. And this time use a timing light! LoL

Re: Bah =/

what kind of engine and intake system (carb, tbi, tpi, etc)? could be timing or it could be running overly rich. i have an 84 with carbed v8 and the choke thermo was dead and would always stay closed and when it was warm it would always do that when you shut it off cuz of it bein rich from choke bein closed.

dieseling also happens when your engine runs too hot, but you usually only on carbed engines. assuming this is carbureted, what happens is, the pistons and combustion chamber get so hot that after the key is turned off and as the engine winds down, it's still pulling gas from the carb, then the fuel ignites on contact as it hits the combustion chamber

Re: Bah =/

dieseling could be caused by a number of things. Your idle speed could be set too high, timing off, overheat (check thermostat, radiator, water pump if that's the case),solenoid at the side of the carb could be fucked up.

I'd say just start checking these devices and see if you can't figure it out, if that doesn't work then I have another idea but it's a long shot.....

Run-on can be can be caused by carbon build-up.
I had the same symptom with my 78. I inadvertantly repaired the problem one day when my thermostat stuck closed. The overheating (300
*) caused it to want to stall, but because I have a "refuse to lose" attitude I kept my foot in it. The high temp and nitro type rattling caused a large cloud of carbon smoke to exit the exhaust. From then on the problem ceased.

Re: Bah =/

normally if your engine is basically stock, you should run 87 or 89 tops. if you advanced the timing or did headwork or anything else that needs higher octane, then go and use the 93. 93 on the stock engine isnt good for it cuz its set up to accept the lower octane fuel, in accordance with emmissions regulations crap. thats all i can remember for now

Re: Bah =/

go with a higher octane, that sounds like the problem. but like hellraiser said, it shouldnt really NEED the 93 unless its been toyed with. i would look into where the timing is and maybe carbon build up on the pistons...
