Well it sounds like you don't know a lot about these cars to start with so you definately need to check out www.scuderiaciriani.com and www.rx7turboturbo.com Both sites have tons of info on them. If you're gonna go drag racing get a Mustang. They're super cheap to buy, mod, and easy to fix. The RX7 is gonna be a big money pit and believe me you'll end up hating it unless you have a lot of dough rolling in. It wasn't intended to drag race from the get-go so you won't even get to experience the incredible handling it has to offer.
The turbos don't actually have a typical "life span" per-se, but with most turbos they usually could stand a rebuild/replacement at anywhere between 50k-90k miles. It really depends on the overall condition of the car and how the owner took care of it. Remember these are high performance cars and the owners usually treat them that way so the engine/turbos are probably due for a rebuild. Definately read up a LOT on them before you even think about getting into one and have it checked out very thoroughly by a qualified (knowledgeable) rotary mechanic. They're complicated and very tempremental (not really reliable either) cars. If you really wanna get into rotary cars I'd suggest getting an early 90's n/a 2nd gen and learn to work on that first. If you're already a competent mechanic then maybe a Turbo II wouldn't be too bad. They can be modded to hp levels similar to that of an FD, but not in stock form. They're a lot less complicated too.
