My Skyline motor woes...

... are over! HOORAY! Resin casting is deceptively simple.

A few more and these will be coming out beautifully. If anyone is afraid of casting, don't be, it ain't no thang. It may take a try or two to get it, but with practice, it's easy (like all of modelling.)

Re: My Skyline motor woes...

It's not hard at all, GTMike. I got the try-it-out package from Micromark. It was $70 or something like that. It comes with a lot of material, though, so I feel it was worth it. 16 ounces of each half of the resin, and 16 ounces of each half of the rubber. I could probably make 25+ motors with the resin they sent, and 10-15 different molds this size (just to give you and idea how much that is, I don't need that many motors!) Plus then send you mold release for both making the mold and the castings. I was really pleased with it. You can go from master to part in two nights, or one long night, and most of that time is waiting. Amazingly simple... just take your time and it works. I am still surprised how easy it was.

And yeah, it's the block, valve cover, and timing belt cover from the R32. I am putting them in an R33 and R34, too, so I didn't need to make the drivetrain and oilpan as they are already molded into the chassis.

Re: My Skyline motor woes...

Next task for you Will. Make tires. I still cant figure out how to make the tread. I'm thinking about creating a technique with rubber thats similar to PE.

Re: My Skyline motor woes...

I'm not going to sell, I am just casting the Tamiya motor... for, erm, personal use, of course. I got the set because there are a lot of things I want to cast. This motor, another very expensive motor (you get 3 guesses, the first two don't count), the fastback and bumpers for the S2000 fastback racecar that is coming down the pipe, stacks of tires for either side of a chicane on a racecourse diorama, and stock bumpers (and other stock parts) for a 92-95 Civic and Eclipse. Every hour I come up with new stuff to cast. I think the initial cost is well worth it. I've cast 3 Skyline motors so far... that's $60 in cannibalized kits. It makes things like the stacks of tires easy and cheap, possible really - I love the way the barriers look on racetracks, but you won't catch me painting 20-30 tires blue or white just for a diorama, think of the cost!

Re: My Skyline motor woes...

Oh, and GTMike, I've already started thinking about tires, I am going to make them in solid resin though. My first tire will be a 17" Falken Azeni. My goal is to make a full Autocross Civic sometime, a lot like mine. I would my my actual 1:1, but no one makes 15" wheels.

[/willimo being so excited!!]

So, how are you going to make the tread pattern? I have been looking to no conclusion.
