Sorry guys if I sound like an amatuer...
Well, its because I am. I am very interested in the Skyline, but have very little knowlegde of them. I was into V-8 muscle for years and am now looking into an import preferably a Skyline. I have owned three Mustangs, I know they are not very good looking cars but they are easy to make fast. I have owned a '86 Mustang SVO. They were produced to rival the BMW's and Porsche's of the '80's and did a very good job. I am hooked on turbocharged vehicles, but the Skyline really caught my eye. So here are a few questions.
What is the difference between the GT-R, R33, R34, and the R35? How hard is it to get one over seas?(GT-R) What is the average price I would be looking at to get a GT-R here in the states? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I know that answering the first question might be a little time consuming so a referal to a web site would also be welcome. Thanks in advance. |

hmmmmmm the R32 gt-r is the first of the revival of the GT-R in japan in 1989. its was the first of the godzilla line. it runs on a RB26DETT. its a 2.6 liter straight six that is twin turbo charged. it has a safisicated slit torque 4WD. soo in other words, it acts as a RWD car until it loses traction sooo that it will send power to the front. it also has 4wheel steering. also the next generation would be the R33. it is taller and has a longer wheelbase. it has good straight line stablity but it loses it tight cornering ablity that the R32 had. its torque also went up by 20lb. now the finaly version sooo far is the R34. this ones torque split and all wheel steering, is totally computer controlled that monitors traction at 10 times a second. it also has a computer screen that monitors you cars every activity such as throttle position, boost levels, and it even has a G meter that showes you how much G it can pull while aceleratiing braking and cornering. you can also download all this information into your lap top. this one now uses a ceramic turbines to reduce lag, and now its torque goes up by another 20lbs. well waht nissan said about the HP is 280. but thats to get past the japanese gentlemen agreement. but in reality i've read that many skyline owners have put their stock cars on the dyno and they read at 328hp. sooo it can launch the 3400+ lb car from 0-60 in less then 5 seconds. and how can you get them? you can take a look at www.skylinegtr.com motorex is the only company that can get them officially into the country. a used R32 goes for around 30G. a used R33 goes for around 60G. and the brand new R34 goes for around 90G. if i had a choice i would definitly go for the R34 since its the most advance and the fastest sports coupe in the world. but sicne i dont' have that kind of money and i have a more realistic budget. i would pic the R32 over the R33. sure the mechanics behind it is more crude. but i think the R32 looks better and its smaller and lighter.

Thanks for the info. It was definately needed. I was thinking somewhere along the line of $60k. I also agree $90k is a little to rich for my blood, maybe ina few years or when I hit the lotto...lol. Regardless, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me.

Tat, I went to the website that you posted as a link and they have a beautiful '96, Ithik it's an R33, not to sure. I am going to get in contact with them next week. It has somewhere in the neighborhood of 20kmiles and they only want $53k for it. Well, it sounds like a good deal to me. They also have a link to convert it to a left hand drive. Will that decrease the value of it?

Hi, here I am!
The 32 is the lightest, 33 is the longest and 34 is the heaviest and widest! 34 has the most torque number at the lowest rpm and it has Getrac 6 speed gearbox ( rumour has it that it's gearbox is not as robust as the 33's box - in fact pre 1997 has more robust box than post 97 33). If you are thinking about big hp (more than 550) go for pre 1997 33 or 32 - their stock gearbox can take that kind of power. Having said so, a GTR is a GTR regardless of whether it's a 32,33 or 34! No sane GTR owner is gonna keep it stock (one resident in my housing area has one dead stock though! ). If you are thinking about racing them, I would go for the 32. The 34 is however so awesome lookin' it's gonna wet the pants of everybody you would care to tailgate! In the look department, I would go for the 34 anytime! As for the 35, the look is really different from the earlier model - more European if you like!- although you can see the similar DNA. Nobody knows the engine they are gonna use in the 35 and in view of the 34 being discontinued this August due to emission control, it looks like the famed RB26 DETT has senn its days. For more technical similarities and differences, go to www.gtr.co.uk - it has excellent write up. Yes, the GTRs are expensive outside Japan. Even here in Malaysia, it cost as much as Motorex's price due to govt. duties...but once you drive one, you are not gonna look at any other car that easily anymore! Happy skylining

I am looking to make huge horespower with one of these cars. I would prefarbly like a 34, but price is a little to rich for my blood. So, to make huge power I sould go with and early 33? Maybe a 32? How can I tell if a 33 is an early production? By the production #? If so where is it located. I love the way all the Skylihes look. Thanks.

The early production R33 would 1994 though rumors have it that they actaully started to build them in 1993. The R32 continued through the 1994 calendar year and quite a few very vspecII's.
You can get very good hp out of any of the GTR's. It will come down to how deep your pockets are or how friendly you are with your bank manager. To give you a target or goal in Japan if you show up to a GTR meeting and have less than 800 hp they will look at you sideways. That seems to be the starting point of performance other than that it would appear that the rest are just run around cars. Here in New Zealand there are quite a few with over 450 hp with 1 recently reaching the 1028 bhp mark. Have fun and enjoy your ride when you get it.

Thanks for the info. I am in the states and skylingtr.com seem to be the only people that sell here. Do you know if it would be hard for me to get one her? Skylinegtr is in CA so I am assuming it won't. I am going to contact them this week to see what I can do to get one. Well, I guess if 800hp is the bench mark I am going to have to have deep pockets. Like I told my father, in the car is where it counts, well, if your in a skyline.

If you are looking at 800 horses, you might as well buy a 34, finance permitting of course, as you would have to change the gearbox anyway! The car will be awesome man...though driveability might suffer. This guy in S'pore has a 800 horses 34 and it's pure madness to drive on the street!
