Grinding reverse

My 88 mustang GT sometimes when shifting into reverse will make a grinding sound. The clutch is fully depressed and all other gears I have no problem with. Sometimes to limit the grinding ill rev the engine and it will slip into reverse with no grinding. Do you know what the grinding could be? This is the only gear that has this problem and its not consistent.
Thx for any input.
P.S. Its a quick grind.

It's a fairly common thing caused by the tanny forks set-up. Try putting the tranny into first and then going into reverse. Either way it's not something to worry about.

Re: Grinding reverse

Reverse isnt a syncronized gear. It may be spur cut if I'm not mistaken, been a long time since I built a manual tranny of any kind other than a Jerico. But yes if you go into a forward gear and then into reverse it should go right in just fine. Other than that if you can let the car roll just a little bit it will turn the tranny and should line the gears right up for you. But no it is nothing to worry about, just annoying. No fix for it that I know of.

Re: Grinding reverse

Thx for advice guys ill switch into a forward gear and then reverse. Also this is off the topic, but I was thinking about throwing in a cold air intake, it fits my budget,im wondering if i have to convert to mass air or i can stick with the speed density and still put one on.

Re: Grinding reverse

i guess we all have our own way of not grinding when going into reverse. i have the same problem on my 99 cobra. i put the car into second gear with the clutch fully depressed, and then put it into reverse. every way seems to work.

You don't have to switch to MAF many companies make CAI for SD. Also if you are planning on switching to MAF someday BBK also makes a set-up that uses a spacer where the MAF would be so you don't have to buy a new CAI when you switch.
