1995 T/A questions
How involved would it be to repair the head from a blown spark plug? A guy cross threaded the spark plug and blew it out. How much would a new head cost?
What are some simple mods that don't cost a lot that I can put on the car itself to give it more hp? |

Re: 1995 T/A questions
Headers and an Exhaust are a good (relatively) cheap mod for 350s.
Probably the most HP for your dollar would be a cam swap however. But that would be a little harder to do then just bolting on headers.

A single LT-1 Head would cost you around $375-450.
I'm not sure if you're able to repair the damage of the crossthreaded bolt hole after it was blown out. But if you can, you can save yourself some money by using a Tap n' Die set to re thread the hole. That's only if the head is worth saving. But to get the heads off of the motor, in a 4th Gen F-body as far as I know you'll have to pull the motor. And if you're going to go through that much trouble for a single head, you might as well throw on a set of after market heads for better performance. Might as well, you've already got the motor out and partially apart. Like these Edelbrock heads: $529.99 a head. Check out ThunderRacing for all your F-Body go fast parts: http://www.thunderracing.com/

Well, both motors sit in the same position as far I know of in the engine bays. But yeah, it's a pain in the ass cause just about half of the motor is under the firewall. To me, it'd seem easier to pull the motor and toss the heads on. While it was out, it'd be even easier to throw in a nice new roller cam.

except that on a foruth gen F-body, you have to drop the frot sub frame and drop the engine from below, another one of GM's bright ideas

Re: 1995 T/A questions
It's not necessary to drop the motor to swap the heads, but obviously preferrable if you have that option. Also, if you just want some replacement stockers, you can pick them up used for about $400-500 in good shape. People are constantly selling them over on camaroz28.com. For the price of new heads (~$1200), you can pick up a set of used heads that have had a nice port/polish job done to them already. Throw in another $450 for a cam kit and you're well on your way to a nice amount of power.

I have help my friend do a head swap on his LT-1 without pulling the motor out but what a PITA!!!!!!!!
I'm sure you can fix your spark plug hole on the head. Even if you personally can't your local machine shop will do it for a decent price.

Re: 1995 T/A questions
Unless you plan on doing some real high performance modding to the motor spending bundles on aftermarket heads isn't worth it. Get some used stockers in good shape and have them ported, the stock heads will produce sufficient power. Then you can spend the money you saved on something else, like a cam and gears.

If money is tight, then he doesn't need to worry about modding his engine in the first place, so an after market set of heads would be out of the question. But if he has some a little money to spend, then why not get a higher flowing set of heads?
