Le Mans contest entry: BMW M1 "Carte de France" LM 1980 Gr.4 IMSA

Hey everybody, Iīm sure I will enter the contest and try to hold up to you guys with this BMW M1.

The picture you see is from a race at the IMSA, didnīt find a descent
one from the Le Mans race for the forums.

The car is coverd with the map of France! Decals look like this:

http://www.hlj.com/scripts/hljpage.cgi?S27DC636C

The kit will be detailed with a Renaissance Trans Kit for the LM 1980 race and a scale production photo etched parts set incl. photo etched rims. I donīt know, whether the kit is curbside, but I will be using the REVELL BMW M1 Protar kit and then add everything.

Iīll post more pictures, when all the stuff needed arrived at my place!

BTW, does anybody have pics of the Le Mans 1980 race? I desperately need some reference pics on that car... very hard to find!

Was wondering who'd be the one to replicate that car, I knew someone would! Great choice, and best of luck with all the decals. Looking forward to the progress report.

The ESCI/Revell M1 has full chassis and engine detail. This picture is from Le Mans, the car ran in the IMSA class. The link below is the only online pic found in a quick search. Trev.

This is the picture I already have, but it is way to small to capture the beauty of that M1. Thanks for the info on the curbside issue. Now I know in which category I will compete and most likely not be look too good against all the other top modelers. But, hey, thereīs a lesson in every model, isnīt it (I believe thatīs what someone on the forum says in his signature?)

I'm glad somebody is doing this. Fascinating livery and car. I'm sure you'll do a great job with it.

Great entry! I'm so happy it finally enters this contest!
But doc will be hard to find on the net!
I'm sure if you follow the Renaissance transkit instructions you'll have an accurate copy of the real thing...

So most of the stuff needed for the Le Mans project arrived. Looks like I got myself a Toughy! Man, those decals are sweet, most of the car will be covered by just decals:

The scale production Le Mans Detail Set, look at those rims, hope theyīll look as sweet on the model, as I imagine right now:

Some Bodyworks will need to be accomplished, so there will be a new front bonnet and new rear fenders.

The whole resin set for the Map de France - M1 includes also fuel fillers and caps for it:

The only things I need to get started is colors and about 3 gallons of decal softener!

I recently started on the contest entry. Starting the body work, I faced some major disappointment. This kit has so many bad mold lines and needs lots of putty and sanding work before I can start with the primer. Second of all the rear hood hardly fits and I will need to adjust the rear hoods fitment with lots of putty, so it will look some sort of acceptable.
Now some pics. I put the rear and the front bumper onto the chassis and cut out the front hood which will be replaced by a resin one.

(sorry, the picture is out of proportion...)

I also like to show the difference between the original front hood and the Transkit hood. I guess you can see that the air intakes are much bigger.

Hopefully you can see on the next picture that even the BMW kidney needs some work as it is totally out of shape laying against the front part of the kit

Front bumper again

And one more time the transkit (or parts of it) with the instruction sheet. Canīt wait to get my hands onto that!

Overall the quality of the Revell BMW M1 Procar is poorer than I first thought. Lots of work to do, which you can omit on Tamiya and Fujimi kits!

Comments welcome, as always!
