I received an e-mail the other day that I would like to share with everyone. It just made me feel pretty good, and I thought you guys would enjoy it, knowing the info was from this site.
Hi Craig: I just wanted to thank you for your excellent web instructions from March 2003. My old ’89 LX 5.0 has over 223,000 on it and I’ve put nearly 200,000 on it since I purchased it used in February of ’92. It is bone stock except for Flowmasters. In ’01, I replaced a rusted deck lid, had it repainted, completed some minor repairs and retired it from active daily commuting. My fair weather weekend toy ran just great until this spring when my core began to leak like crazy. I knew I had to do something to fix it fast. The shops around here want upwards of $700.00 for the job. I mentioned the possibility of doing the job myself to one of my local parts shops and the owner groaned, “Ugh! 5.O Mustangs have some of the nastiest cores to replace!” I do my own routine maintenance and repairs, brakes etc., but I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about tackling this particular job myself. However, I was emboldened by your webpage and soon thereafter I ordered a core and hoses for something around $50.00. Extended life antifreeze and an R134 AC conversion kit added just a bit more to the overall cost of the job. Simply stated, your instructions made this often dreaded job easy for me and you saved me a bundle! I finished the job last week and the HVAC system works flawlessly. By doing it myself, I got to really clean up the console, dash and instrument panel parts as well as lube the speedo cable for the first time. The only aberration was that I did find one extra “mystery” retainer nut underneath the dash up inside near the steering column topside retainer that temporarily gummed-up the removal of the dash. Once I located it and loosened it from underneath with a long socket and extension, the whole dash fell gently backwards. I was not sure if your car may have come with a simpler configuration. I guess they are all just a bit different. Thank you again ever so much for your great instructions and for saving my family much hard-earned cash. I have learned a lot from you. I hope that you are still enjoying your beautiful ’89. You sure know how to make yours into a real powerhouse and street rod in addition to a great teaching tool. Sincerely, Dr. Aurelius (Rex) Gori
