1998 Regal Stalls on Accel, won't restart
Hello,
I have a 1998 Regal GS with a recurring problem. When I get on the accelerator at high speeds, say, to pass, the engine completely stalls and will not restart. It cranks, but will not turn over. This first happened a year ago and the shop claimed a problem in the fuel pump was causing a fuse to blow. Replaced the entire fuel pump and said it shouldn't happen again. Two weeks ago it happened again and they told me that this time it was just a clogged fuel filter causing the fuse to blow; replaced the fuse and filter. Car worked fine for two weeks, under all kinds of driving. Yesterday it happened for a third time -- same situation, on a highway, passing. If my fuel filter has clogged after two weeks then I'm buying gas at the wrong place!!!! I've read articles online with what sound sort of similar (http://www.motorage.com/motorage/art...l.jsp?id=68249) and refer to a bad resistor on the circuit providing power to the fuel pump, but it almost sounds like the circumstances of the failure are reversed. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Bad resistor? Bad fuel pump? Theft system kicking in for some reaons? Anything? Any thoughts much appreciated |

I'd say replace your plugs and wires, and have your injectors cleaned.

Replacing the plugs & wires won't do any good. The car ran fine when it did run so these parts are just fine. Bad spark plugs and/or wires don't make a car just suddenly stall and not able to start. When is the last time you heard of someone being stranded due to spark plug failure? Make sure that the shop installed a new strainer with the fuel pump. Try replacing the fuel pump relay. Check your ground connection at the fuel pump. Has the Service Engine Soon light come on at all? If so, get the car scanned somewhere, see what the codes are, and go from there.

My bad ruley, I was in a hurry, and skimmed the post, and only saw the section about passing. Tbrubes, please disregard my first post, and follow what ruley said.

Thanks for the suggestions. There are no warning lights, and no other warning signs for that matter. I drove it pretty heavily in the two weeks between the second and third occurrence with no trouble whatsoever.
I have the car at a shop now (different than last time, was out-of-state) so I'll see about the strainer. This article really caught my attention ( http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=164545 ) regarding the anti-theft system firing when the turn signal was engaged, but I really don't understand how that could happen. If the theft system cuts off the fuel pump, does it do that by causing the fuse to blow? And what is the relation to the turn signal? Seems like grasping at straws to me but apparently it has been a problem for some people... |
