it takes about 5 minutes to download on my modem, not quite a 56K. and it's easy to start up, and if you don't know you can read kbslacker's write-up

Which server service ? Undernet or Dalnet? If it is on Dalnet then I cant get in for some reason. Undernet I have no problem.

Pirch will not work
If you are using Pirch as your IRC client software you will find it nearly impossible to get logged into the servers.
I have had to go to MIRC to get there but it works. CU there if you dare
