My friend and I went to the track. He ran some slow times. What is wrong with his car?

My friend and I went to the Drag strip last night in his 95 mustang gt.This was his first time taking his mustang to the track and he wanted to see what it would run.Well turns out he was only running low 10's in the 1/8 at around 70-74 mph.It is an auto but is has 4:10's,full exhaust, pulleys and an air intake. He ran with no tire and jack too.
He ran mostly against ricers that were running high 10's.Now doesn't his time seem a little slow for his car and his mods? But I think I know what the problem is.After racing in the car with him at around 60 mph (don't remember if it was 2nd or 3rd gear) his car was at 5000 rpm's and it stayed there and wouldn't shift for about 3 seconds giving the other car plenty of time to catch up then it finally shifted. When he raced he took the ricers off the line then started pulling on them and when his car went to 5000 rpm's and wouldn't shift for 3 seconds the hondas would actually catch up right next to him then his car would shift and he started pulling real hard on them.We talked to the guy we raced and he had an early 90's honda with only a CAI and exhaust. He ran a 10.8 as to my friend ran a 10.2 Do you think there is something wrong with his shift points because of the 4:10's?We talked to some mustang guys there and they said with his mods he should be running low to mid 9's in the 1/8.They also said his car needs a shift kit and that will solve the problrm. Is that what it is? Does his car need a shift kit.

Oh yeah he also ran his car with o/d off. That was even worse he told me 1/2 way down the track his car hit 5000 rpm's and it stayed there and didn't shift at all so his car kind of glided the rest of the way down the track just sitting there revving at 5000 rpm's.

His tranny is F'ed up.

A shift kit changes how the computer controlls the shifting. IE: how fast it shifts, at what rpm.

He said his car drives and shift fine under normal driving and accleration.Could this be from his 4:10's because before the gear change he never had a problem.

Sounds like he needs a shift kit. It is probably computer controlled which softens the shift to much.

All I can tell you is that the computer in these 94-95 mustang GTs SUCK. I've got a stick and can tell, I can't imagine what its like in an automatic. More than likely its computer related, the computer not only controlling the shift points its also pulling timming while its shifting and accelerating. Im performing an A9L swap this weekend if my kit gets here tommorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think he just needs a shift kit, chip(that changes his shift points), or the Baumantor TCS.

Will a shift kit alone stop this shifting problem?
How much is a Baumantor TCS?

Shift kit is definately the way to go. He needs to make his shift firmer and snapier and a shift kit will do that.

Well the stock AODE in your friend's 95 is set-up as a compromise of performance and daily driving. So even in stock trim at WOT there was some hesitation before shifting the 4.10's have just made what was always there and amplified it. If you got in my car as it is with the Trans-go shift kit the 1-2 shift when not under full throttle is snappy enough to whip your head back not exactly something mom or grandpa wants to deal with every day. Under WOT shifts fast with no hesitation and feels perfect. Maybe that explains why a shift-kit or chip or baumantor TCS can all fix the problem.

I think the baumantor TCS is like $400 but I really don't remember...
