Twin Turbo Plans for an 88 GT

Well I have a 1988 GT 5.0L with a 5 speed manual. I have a mods done to it. (MAC Off-road H- pipe, Mac Long Tube Headers, accel wires, accel super coil, cold air intake, 2 1/2 flowmaster, quick shife 5.0 shifter. 3:73 Posi. Among other things but I am thinking about doing a summer project either this year or this winter. I am wanting to put twin turbos on my Mustang. I have heard such things as taking two turbos from cars like Saabs or other older cheaper cars with turbos. If maybe i could get some segestions on kits, cheap ways of doing it, or just precautions.
Well anything would be great. if you want pictures just tell. Thanks!!!

Re: Twin Turbo Plans for an 88 GT

I'm currently twin turboing my 351c in a '69 stang. My only advice is to RESEARCH!!! You can't know enough, and if you don't, you'll break something. Turbos are very nice - they add the most power out of any kind of blower, they let you retain stock driveability and gas mileage(if you can keep off the throttle!).. but they are a complex system, and it takes a very well balanced setup to work well. Let me know exactly what you want to do, and I can help you out. And yes, turbos off Saabs and such are good choices for a 302. I went with turbos off late 80s turbo thunderbirds, since I have more cubes and need bigger turbos. I'm just starting my project after over a year of research and planning, so I'll be posting pics of my progress soon. I'm starting on making the exhaust manifolds tomorrow... should be fun. Hope to have them done in a week or so.

One piece of advice, ditch the flows.

Search on the web, tons of sites devoted to JYTT kits.

Boosted is right though chambered mufflers and turbo cars do not mix!

There is an article about how switching from flowmasters to dynomax ultraflows on a turbo stang netted a 25RWHP gain on the dyno.

Well when you turbo, the sound of your car as you know it will be gone.. sorry to break it to you, but the turbo alters the exhaust note. Some say you can get by without mufflers since the turbo kills the sounds so much.

Re: Re: Twin Turbo Plans for an 88 GT

I to am turbo charging a 351C and installing it into a 1995 mustang Gt but I'am barely down to the bare block heads and crank shaft which ar CJ but i'am having a hard time finding twin turbo headers to fit the 351 C without having to custom some headers to fit. If you can help in any way possible it would be greatly appreciated.

If you can help in any way possible it would be greatly appreciated.

You are gonna have to go custom, I have never seen a 351C kit for sale. 351C is a darn good engine, but going TT on it your gonna run into a lot more issue. Nothing wrong with that, but just expect it.

Your gonna want to drop that comp ratio to around 8.5 or maybe a little lower.

I am thinking of beefing up my 2.3.... ya ya laugh all you want lol. I was thinking of either finding the turbo 2.3 from the thunderbird or mustang... or find a turbo kit to put on my stock 2.3... Is the stock 2.3 that i have built the same as the 2.3 turbo? Or is the turbo built differently to handle the turbo charger?

The turbo 2.3 is built differently.

Geez, how many times have I told this story? Oh well, I like talking about it.

A friend of mine took 2 turbos from 2 Buick Grand Nationals and put them on his 91 5.0. He had all the basic bolt ons before, then after the turbos he's GUESSING that he has ABOUT 400-450 horse. He did not prepare the bottom end (head gaskets and all the other stuff) for turbo, he didn't plan on doing it when he had the engine apart earlier. So he's only running about 5 pounds of boost. He said that there were times he wondered WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING!! But he took his time and researched it and did it. He had to put some kind of heavy foil pieces under the hood for heat shields. He's planning on getting a new hood like the ram air to get cool air in or the cowl hood to get the hot air out.

If you want me to tell him to get on here and tell how he did it just let me know.
GOOD LUCK...YOU'LL NEED IT

yea a good bottom end and lower compression ratio are a good start for boosting...
