M3 vs testarossa

hi everyone, this is my first thread...

well anyway, i was with my dad in the M3,and we were driving down this straight dual carriageway near our house in the south of the UK.
i was talking to him about the exhaust upgrade he has and whether it actually makes any tangible performance difference, when i hear a faint high pitched motor noise.

it could only be a ferrari, with that mechanical exhaust note; it was a 512 testarossa driven by a couple of young guys (how lucky were they??). anyway, they pulled alongside our car, and audibly dropped a gear, so my dad (bless him, never thought he' take a challenge!) paddle shifted into third, and both cars hit it at the same time.

well the result was a convincing win for the M3! we stopped when we could see cars in the distance, my dad being one of the least reckless people i know.. unfortunately the ferrari turned off soon after, so i couldnt get another look at it

anyway, if this isnt interesting i apologise, but it was exciting for me at the time! and nice to see two fast cars racing rather than the vauxhall corsa's with huge exhausts i see all too frequently..

yes, it is supposed to give an increase of 10-15 bhp..

any other mods invalidate the Beemers warranty, an hes not keen to do that..sensible i guess..

Re: M3 vs testarossa

so your dad has about 350hp at 3400lbs and he beat a 512 tr with 430hp at 3200lbs with a top speed of 195mph

i'm not the one to usually call bs but that just doesn't sound right. i think maybe your dad hit it a lot earlier than the tr. cause statistically that just doesn't sound right, at all.

Hmmm..Bimmer with exhaust beats out Testarosa?

Highly unlikely...unless the goon didn't know how to drive, but even so, the Ferrari has more power and weighs less.

Comments from others???

gotta pull that out....

The test was just messing around then, not really gunning it. It might have been a rental?

Unless it was a kit car, but wait, he said he heard a high pitch engine noise? so it couldn't be.

Yes, I think it's those crazy M3 enthusiasts trying to make the M3 look like a supercar, when it really isn't, not with all the computer controlled shit.

Those new M3's are pretty quick... and it's possible the young fellows driving the prancing Horse were a bit scared to take chase after the BMW.

Just because I like to drive fast on occasion doesn't mean I'd want to take a Ferrari up to 195mph. Especially on a public road.

Bringing to mind, Ferrari's aren't the easiest to drive. From watching Best Motoring International Vol. #9 "Fuji Fast". The highlight of the dvd was the Fuji speedway sayonara battle. With a Porsche GT2, Ferrarie 355 F1 (which loses it's brakes and goes off into the gravel trap at the start of the final lap), Ferrari 360 F1 Modena (JGTC500 driver was scared to push it faster than it was going, cause it was squirely), Nissan Skyline R34 GTR (DNF, broke down after first lap), Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo VIII and lastly Honda NSX Type-R.

The Ferrari's were doing good, but both drivers complained about the cars performance incomparison to the NSX and Porsche. The Porsche walked away from everybody.

Which leads me to the conclusion that it is possible for an older more experianced driver to beat a Ferrari in a lesser vehicle. But, with out any real proof. I will not say it's true, nor will I say BS.

it was one of the earlier models, with less hp. is my guess anyway.

1985 Ferrari Testarossa

0-60 mph: 5.3 sec
Horsepower: 390 bhp @ 6300 rpm
and bear in mind this race went from about 20 mph to about 90mph, so it wasnt protracted out to higher speeds where the ferrari would have probably (definitely?) won.

i could hear the guys in the ferrari racing it; its pretty obvious when a ferarri's engine is screaming.

anyways, im not trying tomake out the M3 is a better car, or faster or anything, im just relating a story which happened to me and my dad. maybe he's a better driver, maybe it was an older testarossa, maybe they werent driving it the way it shoudla been.maybe the m3 was stronger in those speeds.

they were young, and rental did cross my mind..

so dont call bs on the story, cos it happened. you can dispute the ferrari facts though, cos i have no proof of how they were driving, the year etc..

i'm so glad that someone used their brain on this one...

b/c i know that everyone who is calling BS has driven a ferrari to know that it would *eat* an m3?

It's great to be back in the street racing section, where no matter what your story is someone doesn't believe it!

It's also possible that the Ferrari's engine may be on the tired side. So if it started life with 405 hp in the 80's and has never been replaced or not kept up well it may no longer be producing that much power.

I ran against an M3 a month ago up to around 100 mph and he was fast. Stayed to my door the whole way. They are quick... and I underestimated it when I shouldn't have.

Well... the '04 M3 IS a 13 second car, according to some websites I've seen. So it's not a slouch. I'm sure when the Testerossa was new it did better than 13's but it's old now.

i have a video of some guy running a 12.something in an E46 m3. all he had was some cams i believe, which he didnt thnk made a big difference.

not that that is saying or proving anything, i know.

my theory is still that it was an earlier testarossa with 390hp, 0-60 in 5.3. but who can say for sure..
