For a while now my clutch pedal(on my 86 Civic)is extremely hard to push in, its almost like a weight machine.
I checked my Haynes manual and it said it could be due to the cable binding. Does anyone know what it could be? Or if you have a 3rd Gen Civic/CRX, has your clutch, or clutch linkage ever given you trouble? |

I knew a couple people who've had the stiff clutch problem. All they/their mechanics had to do was adjust the clutch linkage and they were happy campers.

Dont know about the 86 civic but on the CRX you can see the clutch cable running right to the tranny and it's adjustable by just turning it. Dont know if this helped ya out or not.

could be your clutch cable starting to seize in the envelope or could be the pressure plate on the clutch that's broken.
But I'd start by adjusting the clutch. |

Start by adjusting the cltuch. On my SiR there is a plastic knob on the G/box that the cable runs through, you can turn it to adjust any slack in the cable, Im sure the USDM cars have the same setup, if not it will be a couple of nuts that you can undo and wind up, the same the throttle cable.
You want to leave some slack in the cable, leave about 1/8th of an inch's movement in the clutch lever under the cable, it donst have to be exact, just so the cable dosnt have any tension when the pedal is out. If this dosnt solve the problem then you need to look at prehaps discontecting the cable at the clutch end, if its still tight then the problem is in the cable or pedal. Replace the cable, and lube up the pedal. If the cabel moves easily and freely, (dont push down fast on the pedal you might lose the cable end) then the problem is in the clutch itself, and it means replacing the clutch.

It's the same with both the B16A and D15/D16 gearboxes. Just a screw setting (better than the circlip on on 1G and 2G civics). My guess it that the clutch itself has issues though. Could be the thrust bearing if it has jammed or siezed to the input shaft.

Re: Heavy, Stiff Clutch
I just found the sight and am an impressed FNG. The problem with your pedel is a dirty cable. take the cable loose from your pedel after releasing all the adjustment from the other end, after you pull the cable through the fire wall suspend it from the hood and keep spraying WD OR any good light lube down the wire rope,it will take time.after you work the cable free back and forth use speedometer cable lube so this wont happen again.

My garage said my cars clutch was 10 times stiffer than it should be they adjusted it and it made it way lighter but then it had trouble changing gears so they adjusted it back, aparently the whole clutch is just seized so im going to have to get it overhauled
