V8 in a 911??????
hey guys, i found an article saying that the 998 that's supposed to come out around 2008 may have the cayenne derived v8!!!! i REALLY hope this is just some stupid rumor, cuz it would be an absolute tragedy if porsche takes away the classic, wonderful-sounding flat-6 from the 911. PLEASE reply if u have any info about this!!!
btw, here's the article: http://www2.autospies.com/article/in...articleId=2565 |

Re: V8 in a 911??????
Odd, I heard a rumor about putting a V8TT in the Carrera GT for a low end model!

my biggest concern about this rumor is that logically it seems to be true. since porsche can only draw a limited amount of power from the N/A flat-6, the company has no option to upgrade the power on an carrera except to use a v8. HOWEVER, i do know that the TURBO flat-6 is very modifiable since tuners such as techart and gemballa have gotten 750-800hp out of that engine. the only problem is that i don't know how reliably that sort of power can be delivered, but hopefully the wizards at porsche can figure out how to reliably handle massive hp in the boxer. so perhaps porsche may put a v8 in the carrera models and keep the flat-6 in the 911 turbo and GT2. i suppose as long as they don't defile turbo and GT2, i could live with the loss of the carrera

Re: V8 in a 911??????
i think the plan is to use the v8 in a bigger grand tourer type car in the vein of the db9, whilst the flat 6 will continue to be used in the small sports car (911).
in effect, this means that porsche will then have four cars in their range. boxster 911 cayenne mysterious v8 gt car.

Porsche state that the flat-six is the heart of the 911. The maximum capacity is 4.2 liters yet the mass of the internal components would hamper the torque output.

I hope they don't even consider putting a V-8 in the flagship 911. for one, the purists would be furious. and the 911 cant even begin to fit a V-8 in the back. If that did happen, it would stretch the wheelbase and ruin the classic lines. it would ruin weight distrabution. and to keep the body as short as possible, they would have to take out the rear seats. so these are reasons that Porsche would NEVER transplant a Cayenne V-8.

Re: V8 in a 911??????

Re: V8 in a 911??????
just a guess
but i'd say it's something to do with size, mass, inertia and stress. y'know, if you use bigger cylinders, they'd be heavier and relative output wouldn't be that much greater. the 911 is supposed to be a light sports car after all. i mean, that's why they wouldn't really want to put a v8 into the back of a 911. |
