Typically, the 356 or 914 2.0 would be the hot ticket to have, for most VW based rails. If you're building it from the ground up though, I would suggest a flat six, but they can start getting expensive. No such thing as a cheap 911

It all depends on your budget!!
356 engines are getting exp[ensive to rebuild. 914 engines are Type 4 VW engines. Relatively cheap parts, massively upgradeable. 911 engines weigh a awful lot more than any of the others. You'll need a supplemental oil cooler system, parts are very expensive, you'll need an oil tank cause it's dry sump, yada yada. If you got the money, go 911, IIRC a 2.7 should bolt right on to a T2 tranny. Less money is to build up a T4 engine, it's reliable, less work, no main oil hoses to break/leak. Good luck!
