Help building a fast stang cheap

friend is looking at buying a mustang and making it into a street beast he would drive primarily on the weekends. straped for cash and it would be an on going project as he dumps more money into it... I suggested to him a 5.0 GT or cobra from prob early 90's or late 80's but im not that familiar with em. I am looking for a good idea for a build up for what you guys think would be the best bet to get a mustang into prob the 11's and still have traction... and last... ie not breakdown or have to do constant repairs. I only have one other car I would go with thats cheap and fast but I want to see whats needed.. parts and cost to do the stang first.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Reality check.......parts are not "cheap" and modding a stang to be in the 11's definatly won't be "cheap".
Now if you take ur time and buy addons/bolt ons a bit at a time you can reach your goal. But in the end you will still be spending a good amout of money......

Depending on how much he can spend on a "new" car...I would definatly go with a cobra even though some of the mod parts are more expensive.

Probably the cheapest way to get there, but you gotta be careful... When you start puttin out enough power to get in the 11s, the rest of the drivetrain(trans, driveshaft, rearend) will need a good assessment.

I know parts are not cheap but just trying to see what it would cost. I dont know what you would change on a stock 93 cobra for instance to get that much power and not worry about excessive wear on something.. ie prob have to change pistons, rods, redo valves and cams and bore engine..? is this common? good bad what? also if thats the way to go what manf or cost am I looking at?

If I was going for 11's and cheap I would nick the idea of a 93 Cobra. One they are a good amount more money than a GT and second mosty of the parts that make a Cobra better I would just scrap for other parts to make it run 11's.

Step 1, buy 4-banger car. Step 2, buy 460 out of a truck, toss on some SCJ heads, some new pistons, a decent sized cam, a Vic. Jr intake and an 850/950 carb, put it in front of a C6 with a decent stall, some gears out back, take some weight out of it and hang the fuck on.

Re: Help building a fast stang cheap

boosted's project would probably be the cheapest way.. you'd need to heavily modify a 302 to get you into 11s, with a 460(tons of em, cheap as hell) you have an extra 158 cubic inches, making 550+ HP very easily doable. c6's are dirt cheap as well and can take that kind of power no problem. I'd say thats the cheapest way to do it. new springs up front to keep the nose from burying itself into the ground from the extra weight, throw some caltracs and a spool out back and you're in the 11s.
you can buy 460 swap kits for fox bodies all over the place. Its a common swap, shouldnt be too difficult at all.

Spend $20 on Corky Bell's book (Maximum Boost), read it front to back twice, and then join the forums over at TurboMustangs.com. You will figure things out pretty quick after that.

Re: Help building a fast stang cheap

Good advice. Excellent book. I'm currently building a 393x(aka a clevor aka windsor block with cleveland heads) to take high teens/low 20s boost and spin to 6500. Granted its not a gonna be a cheap project like this guy's askin, but it should also get me a lot lower than 11s. I'm aimin for single digits.
