99 Grand Cheerokee oil filter housing Leak???
Have a 99 GC (4.7 V8) and have oil leak around the oil filter area. Not sure if it the oil pressure sending unit or the oil filter housing? Anyone know how to check to see where the leak is?? Also, how tough is it to change the oil filter housing? Any help would be appreciated, my driveway is starting to get oil stained!! Thanks---

First I would clean the engine around the oil filter housing to see if thats where its coming from. If so its a matter of 3 o rings, a new filter and a quart of oil. That was the case with my 95zj 4.0, buy the orings from the dealer about 5 or 6 bucks, don't go to napa I've heard of complaints that they are a little bit off which results in another oil leak. My 95 4.0 is hard enough so I don't know about yours, but mine took a t65 bit to remove the housing, the dealer wanted 90$ to do it. You might not have enough room to do it yourself, but I don't know for sure, hope this helps.

Just an update--
The 99- 2004 V8 does not have a removeable filter housing- My leak was coming from the oil pressure switch loacted directly above the oil filter- It was an easy fix- a $40 switch (from jeep, couldn't find an aftermarket switch) and a 27mm deep socket did the job in 10 minutes. |
