air turns on when passenger door is closed

I have a 2001 isuzu rodeo, when you turn on the car, and turn on the air conditioning nothin happens. When the passenger door is slammed shut, the fan runs and the air conditioner works wonderful and cold. Where do I look to see what is loose? Please help

Try checking the fan motor, it's under the dashboard on the passenger side.
