How old were you all when you started performing mods to cars?

How old were you when you started to modify cars? How long did it take you to learn what you were doing?

I've been around cars for as long as i can remember. My dad was into the street scene back in the 70's. He had a '67 Camaro with a 327 and a close ratio 4-spd. he'd always tune his buddies cars for them(he was good enough that he could do it mostly by ear). a friend of his was a racing nut, who was into the drag and oval track scene. he offered to open a speed shop with my dad, but my dad declined (i was NOT happy to hear about that) anyways, a few years later, i came along and i can remember that even before i could read, i would be flipping through his old issues of HOT ROD, and the Chilton's car manuals he had in his shop. by the time i was at the end of elementary school, i knew how to rebuild a chevy V8, and would consult all my friends parents when they had trouble with their cars LOL. when i got my license, i got the Chevelle. up to that point, i knew how to go about doing pretty much everything on a car, but had never actually done it. I promptly went about doing everything short of a body off restoration. my dad taught me how to tune a motor by ear, being able to hear a motor that's running slightly lean versus slightly rich etc.... sometimes i'll surprise my friends when i hear a V8 coming off from down the road. I'll rattle off the make of the car, and then the motor size(Chevy 350 vs 454, Ford 289 vs429, or Mopar 440 vs 426HEMI) more often then not, it's right on the mark, and it gets a few good laughs. the preliminary parts of wrenching aren't hard to learn. if you're a logical person and are good at putting things together, it will come easily. the other stuff takes a while to develop, and only come through experience.

I was neer really into modding cars until I was old enough to have my own. However if my dad had to work on a car for any reason I was out there watching and handing him tools. Pretty much everything I know about cars I learned from him.

Well, my grandfather owned a shop and from when I was in the first grade, I hanged around with him at the shop after school. Without a doubt, my grandfather influenced me the most and got me interested in cars. He was, and still is, a Ford man, and my dad had a 1970 and '71 Dodge Charger with 440's. It's like a drug or a good dose of adrenaline whenever I hear the sound of high horsepower engine revving or racing. It's one of those things that most girls like my girlfriend don't understand. Maybe it's just me. :smoker2:

My dad owns a shop so I've been around cars my hole life. Around 13 or 14 i really started into them. By the time my 16th birthday came I was so anxious to get my licenss I almost barffed. Then once I took my test (scored a 99% ) I guess you could say it was all down hill from there.
