I have a 94 rodeo LS 4x4. There is a tapping noise coming from the top end of the motor.Sounds like a valve or the timing or something of that nature. The tapping doesn't stop when the truck is warmed up.As you rev, it taps faster. The oil is also way overfull...don't know if that has anything to do with it.We just got the car and so far as we know,it's been well serviced at the dealer from which it came from.It only has 78,000k on it. If anyone has any ideas on the tapping,I'd appreciate some feedback. THANX!!!!!!!!!!

Re: top end of motor tapping-94 rodeo
I would investigate the "overfull" oil immediately. If it's truly just oil, I'd lower the level to recommended right away to avoid damaging the seals. Does the oil on the dipstick look normal?

Re: top end of motor tapping-94 rodeo
the oil looks normal. The tapping concerns me more than the oil.

Re: top end of motor tapping-94 rodeo
The tapping is a common problem with these engines. There have been several threads on it. It occurs intermittently with my 3.2L engine, usually after a couple of days of not driving it. A search will reveal some recommendations. I think the tapping is less harmful to the engine than overfilling the oil.

It could also be the timing belt tensioner. Thats much louder than lifter noises.
