No, the points won't cause it to backfire.
If your timing is way off, it might cause it to backfire. Are you talking about firing out the exhaust, or firing up out the carb?
If you are firing out the exahust, then maybe your points are too weak to ignite all the fuel or the carb is going bad and doesn't give a good mist of the fuel. Also, your timing chain could be slacked and the valves could be slightly off. If your valves are not adjusted properly, and they don't seal well then you could backfire out either the exhaust or intake.
Of course you wrote that post so long ago that you probably sold the truck by now!
You can bolt a distributor from a 1977-79 Datsun truck that uses electronic ignition. Just plug the two wires from the side of the distributor onto the + and - of your coil. of course, the positive on the distributor goes to + and negative to -. Use a manual to figure out which is which if the wires are not red and black.
