another annoying question about the ferrari f40

the real car is a development of the 288 gto right, using more or less the same engine albeit bored out a bit and different compression ratio...

well, my question is, are the engines any different in terms of appearance?

i got a italeri 288 gto kit that i'm putting together and some of the parts are a little heavy compared to the one in my fujimi kit.
i figure the easiest way is for me to just transplant the f40 engine, assuming that they are the same.

thanks.

Some shared components, perhaps.
I think the GTO motor is based on the 328's.

Re: another annoying question about the ferrari f40

well, actually, the gto is based on the 308.
the engine is then rotated and turbod.

anyway, my problem with the engine is that the parts of the 288 gto kit that don't fit too good are the exhausts and well, generally the whole turbo set up and the f40 is the only other ferrari with turbos (bar the 208).

have to admit here that i kind butchered the parts beyond repair trying to fic it.
i've given up on trying to fix it.
i figure taht if the f40/gto engine is interchangable then i could pick up a nice and cheap f40 kit for donation purposes.

The Tamiya F40 engine is pretty naff by todays standards anyway... the exausts are nastey asnd should be replaced with wire versions. The fit's pretty good. Anyway, to answer your question, they do look pretty similar.

As you are in the UK, try and get hold of EVO magazine from a couple of months back with the head to head test of the 288, F40, F50 and Enzo. There's some good reference shots in it.

BTW - Whats the deal with the Elise GT1?

Re: another annoying question about the ferrari f40

it's not the actual exhaust pipes that i'm after, its the whole exhaust(from engine)/turbo/intake/wastegate set up.

the one on the italeri kit is awful.

and the deal with the GT1 was that i was there when they were taking pics of it for the article in evo.
the guys they were talking about 'unsheathing' fag packet sized digital cameras was me and my friends.

and i say lucky in the tag cos well, it is the only one in the world....

I'm doing a custom built F40 Project soon, and have two donor cars, one Tamiya, one Fujimi.

Fancy doing a deal on some parts?
I also have a donor Fujimi 288 GTO enthusiast! I'll do an engine parts swap with your or something!

What have you got?

The F40 and 288 are obviously similar in layout, but I believe there are few common parts. The most similar components, apearence wise, are the actual engine block, however they are not identical- different molds were created for the F40. Moving on from there, though, the apearences diverge with the intake and exhaust assemblies. The intakes, intake manifolds, and especially the exhaust system are significantly different, and one set cannot be passed off as the other. the IHI turbos and the waste gate may be identical components (of this I'm not sure), but the plumbing leading to each is different, as they each fit into different cars.

If you didn't have the constraint of stuffing it all into a car, I expect F40 intake and exhaust systems could be bolted onto a 288 engine block, but it wouldn't look like a 288 powerplant, and it wouldn't fit into a 288. If you were ambitious and clever about reworking the plumbing, you could use an F40 intake manifold atop a 288 engine, and fit it into a 288, but you certainly couldn't mistake it for a 288 manifold.

Re: another annoying question about the ferrari f40

whao....
donating parts from a enthusiasts 288 for an f40?

hmm, the 288 is too preciousto me for that.
the reason i got an italeri kit was that i'm worried that i'll fluff up the em-22....

in anycase, i've spent the last two days bending aluminium wire (3mm) into the parts that i need....

hmmm, y'know, i'm actually quite interested in the 288 gto....
but alas, i'm still very new to this and have only been buying kits for the past month/six weeks.

everything i got is in my post in the thread about unbuilt kits.

still, thanks for the help.

Re: another annoying question about the ferrari f40

Im in the UK too, maybe try Grand prix models, but then again, they are sold out all the time on their latest releases. Especially with the Japanese parts like the Acu Stion items, can give them a try, also really nice guys there..

S27 has a PE set for the F40, Acustion does as well.
I got the bits I used on mine from Replicas and Minitures of Maryland.

F40's vary in details from one car to the next... Side mirrors, side windows, engine heat shields, seats, belts, intercooler markings, US/other bumpers, goes on forever it seems.
lol

Well, you did'nt say that!

I'll see if I can find the link for the crests and nose badges (hobby search?)
If you want Ferrari script badges and cav's you'll have to goto R&M (no site but E-mail)
