Thumbs down Castrol Super Clean ?s

Well, I got your attention.

Ok, I have been soaking my R33 in CSC for like 12+ hours and the paint is starting to flake (slightly). At the rate it is going it may take a week.

The FAQ said it takes 4 hours.

What else can be used to strip paint that will not hurt the plastic?

The car I am soaking was sprayed w/ Tamiya spray.

CSC comes in the big purple jug right?

That is what I bought and used.

Thx

Alfred

You could use Meguiars wax, but I'm not sure about removing the wax once you've gotten rid of the paint.

Don't bother with CSC for any synthetic lacquer paints like Tamiya Sprays or Gunze Sprays I won't do much. Try brake fluid. What works best is Gunze Mr. Color Thinner. Rips those paints right off, but it's not cheap if you're going to use large quantities to strip paint of a 1/24 car body.

What are you on about?

Meguiars wax won't strip paint, it puts a protective layer over it.

Alfred, did you get the CSC concrete cleaner or degreaser?
They both come in purple jugs but the degreaser is the one you want, the concrete cleaner won't do anything to the paint.
Alternatively, when it comes to lacquers, as is mentioned, brake FLUID(not cleaner) is a better bet.

D'oh! I confused that with rubbing compound. Been reading that polishing article too much.

Re: Castrol Super Clean Sucks

rubbing compound will not strip paint off either. it might rub through a paint job if you rubbed 1 spot way too long.
I have a corvett that i left in csc for a while, the secret is to take it out every night and rubb it down with an old toothbrush, this won't take it off immedieatly but will help the stripping process on tamiya sprays.
then i bought a bunch of dot-4 breakfluid and soaked for 1 night and it melted the paint completely off. I had to rub around some of the grooves and edges but is now completely primer and paint free.

Re: Castrol Super Clean Sucks

if you need a fast way, i put some thinner on a rag and wipe it ont he car, then get whet dry sand paper, and sand it with the thinner for a couple mine and then wash it off with water. it wont melt the plastic if you work fast and sand good

I use that as well and I must say that not only it's effective, it's quick as well. But the bad thing about it is that it makes your plastic brittle. I broked a window pillar and a spoiler because of this. It even disintegrated the toothbrush which has faithfully been cleaning up the tight corners for me! Also it's quite smelly. But since I don't have brake fluid or CSC, this is the best way for me to strip paint.

Oh I meant to ask this.

What about Drayno or similar plumber products?

I used Drayno once to remove chrome off plastic wheels.

Is that too tough on the plastic, will it work on Tamaya paint?

Sorry for all the questions.

I just don't want to ruin this Fujimi model.

Thx again

Re: Castrol Super Clean Sucks

if i were you i would go to walmart or an autoparts store and get a couple of bottles of dot4 brake fluid. it works fast and won't hurt the plastic.
plus it's like a buck 25 a bottle.

Use Easy-Off oven cleaner - I guarantee that this stuff will work without harming the plastic at all.

Gunze Color Thinner will strip the paint in no time. But like Junhao says, it will make the plastic brittle, so you have to be careful when handling it. You can use a paintbrush to assist in removing the paint from the plastic surface. The only thing is that Gunze Color Thinner is not cheap.
