AEM intake for 92 Civic EX

OK, I'm thinking about getting intake for my car but I have a few questions about it all.... I am probably going to get AEM because a friend of mine who I trust recomended the brand and someone else can get me a good deal on it. I was wondering if it is worth the risk to get the CAI... I do not want to hydrolock my car because then I wont have a car for a few years if the engine gets fucked...

I know AEM makes a bypass valve to prevent hydrolock and the NSX example they have is pretty impressive but I don't trust it completely... does anyone have any experience with this product?

Also, anyone know what type of performance gain I would get out of the CAI? I have a 92 civic EX

You should be alright unless you're always going to be submerging the WHOLE filter into water ...

you would be fine unless you are looking to drive in a foot and a half+ deep of water. even if so the Bypass will help prevent that hydrolock.

I don't personally have a CAI but when I get mine I'll have the bypass for a precaution even though water isn't a problem here in Va where I live.

Teh CAI is well worth the $ you will spend on it..:frog:

You shouldn't need the bypass valve unless you plan on driving into DEEP puddles consistently. If you're really paranoid, get the bypass valve for the peace of mind.

I've had the AEM CAI on my car for about a year now and have never had a problem with it. You shouldn't need the bypass valve unless you're planning on using your car as a submarine. I don't think it's worth the $$ at all. But if you're looking for peace of mind, go ahead and get it.

as far as performance goes...you are NOT going to get the 10+ horsepower that all of the CAI manufacturers claim. Unless you have other modifications to your car that would nurture the addition of the CAI...you're looking at single-digit increases......maybe even as low as 1-2 hp. But it will feel and sound like you're getting more than that.

OK, thanks for the help, keep it up

Will the bypass valve decrease the power gain? And my friend said he could get it for me included in the price of the CAI so it wouldn't be extra. Another person I've talked to has the AEM CAI with K&N filter on it and he is getting 10-12hp gain at the flywheel he says, that is on a 00 SI though

i have had the cai for almost a year as well and have never had a problem with it. in the beginning i was really nervous about water, but i have been in some pretty nasty weather(including a winter storm we had last week and none of my roads were plowed worth a damn). i even got the bypass valve but never installed it because it said there was a hp decrease. and because i was too lazy.

ok, any estimate on how large the decrease is?

I'm still not sure on the bypass valve, 99.999% of the time I shouldn't have a problem with water, but it's that small percentage that could cost me a lotta money,... plus if my sister ever has to drive my car... well, it will end up in a lake and a bypass valve won't help that

I've got AEM CAI on my 97 Civic EX for about 7 months w/out the bypass valve and haven't had any problems with it and I've driven through the rain LOTS of times. The bypass valve DOES work!! The easiest way to explain it is thinking of your intake as a straw. When you put the bypass valve on your CAI, it is like putting a slit in the top of your straw when you are drinking. I hope this makes some sense.....

it does... but the valve work is supposed to only open the slit when the end of the straw is in water heh

yeah... how easy is install for the CAI?
