Re: rochester quadrajet
if you know how to rebuild it then i would personly go that rought. they are not hard to rebilt you just need to pay atention when you take it apart so you dont lose anything and so you know where everything goes when you put it back together. its pretty straight forward and if you get a rebuild kit from your local parts store then it has a diagram showing all the parts, (not the greatest by anymeans though). as for getting spacificaly a carb that has a square bore, thats kinda up to you. i like spread bore cars, i personly run a quadrajet, cuz they have the small primarys and bigger secondarys so it gives you more or a respoce, not totaly sure how to put it, when you get into the secondaries. lets just say you know when the secondaries open up. now if you dont want to rebild it yourself or have someone do it i would say to just go buy an edelbrock carb. they are a pretty good right out of the box.

Re: rochester quadrajet
why is everyone so scared of quadrajets. i would prefer to rebuild a quadrajet over a holly anyday. i have done both. the only carb i can think of that i have herd is easier is a edelbrock. i dont know about that cuz i personaly have never rebuilt any edelbrocks.

Re: rochester quadrajet
oh, i wasnt refering to on when i was talking about people being scared. i was more refering to the coment that 4onFloor said. if you have it profesinaly rebilt then it will probably cost quite abit. probably not as much as a new carb but im not sure. like i said i do my own so i dont know how much someone would charge. but they are by no means junk. i personaly prefer them over any other carb. they are very tunable if you know how to tune them corectly. but your best bet might be to get a new carb. if your going to do that and want a quadrajet still you can get one from jet. i know either summet or jegs sells Jet quadrajets and they have different levels for different performance levels. (Jet is the name of the company incase you didnt know)

Re: rochester quadrajet
I know some Z28's and Trans Am's come
with a quadrajet that was tuned buy a computer. the model i have come off an 85 camaro 305 liter. i had the motor bored out to a 309 and bought new pistons and had the heads port polished and a valve job. I wonder what kind of power it will make. thats why im kind of skeptical about the old quadrajet. |

Re: rochester quadrajet
that must be because you dont know any chevy guys that work on carbs. there arnt very many people that like them actualy. yet for some reason they came on many many GM cars from the 60's all the way throught the 80's. there must be something good about them for GM to have used them for so many years. people dont know anything about them so they dont like them. thats the way the world works, if you dont know anything about it you dont like it. its called ignorance. but i personly prefer them and i know how they work and how to make them work.

Re: rochester quadrajet
I like the Q-jet. It's just a very sensitive carb. My first rebuild was on a Q-jet, and I found it to be fairly easy. Just be sure to adjust the choke spring properly or you'll only run on 2 barrels. Check for warping of the air horn, make sure the throttle plate bushing isn't worn, and make sure to set the float level very carefully.
A problem that most Q-jets are known for is hard starting when cold. This is most likely caused by the main well plugs. They shink over time and let fuel drain when the engine is shut off. Use a quick set epoxy to seal them before re-assembling the carb. Just my 2 cents

I have to agree. The Q-jet has a bad reputation because most people don't know anything about them. I have rebuilt Q-Jets and Holleys and I can honestly say I prefer the Q-jet.
