Future Tranny Problems?

Not sure how to explain what its doing, but if I come to a sudden stop I feel a bump in the tranny about 3-5 seconds after the stop. Anyone know what this might be? btw its an 89 silverado, 350 auto with OD. Thanks

Re: Future Tranny Problems?

A few years back My 79' had a bump when coming to a stop and I put it off till one day when I was hauling a heavy load the Rear U-Joint let go Dropping my shaft on the road and denting the crap out of it, check your joints for wear and make sure they dont have any play, If they have grease fittings make sure they are full. I let the bump go thinking it was somthing small and it ended up costing me a new drive shaft and two new U-Joints. anyways its someplace to check.

Thanks for the reply Jimmy. I do have a little play from where the tip of the tranny and the drive shaft meet, sorry dont know what the automotive term is. Could this be something inside the tranny? Any reply is appreciated.

Re: Future Tranny Problems?

I had an 88 chevy 1500 2wd with the same problem like comming to a hard stop and letting off the brakes there was a thump, I think it was the rear leaf springs were held in a twisted position by the brakes and when let go twisted back and then the clunk. Maby new leaf springs, I had the light duty 4 leaf maby go with the 5 leaf.
P.S. I never fixed the problem, I traded it in for my new one before it was a big problem.

Re: Future Tranny Problems?

I had the same trouble with my 1989 and this is what it is, the brake cylinder in the back brake drums are leaking fluid in the drums and getting the brake shoes full of brake fluid , so when you put on your brakes the brake pads stick to the drums, now when you let your foot off the brake the truck will make a clunking sound. I changed my brake cylinders in about 1.5 hours, But if you do this you might as well get new back brake lines to because the ones that are on there now will more than likely twist off from the cylinder. I think it costed me like $40.00 to do all this.
One way to tell if they are leaking is by look on the back side of the wheels for any thing that looks like it maybe leaking down the back of the wheel, you should also check you brake fluid and make sure that it's not low. Good Luck.

Re: Future Tranny Problems?

The play you are talking about is normal, the whole Drive shaft should move back and forth just a lil bit, I meant make sure the U-Joint itself is tight. 04BlackSilverado, that is a nice pic of you doing a Smoke show!!

Re: Future Tranny Problems?

The rear lefts should be the problem. Many, many trucks do this. I think its from old age and/or overloading. I myself have replaced many sets of leafs and cured this problem. Its just an annoyance issue.

This is not to be confused with the 4L60/E that clunk when almost coming to a stop(2-7 MPH). The leafs clunk as they settle into position after a complete stop and/or letting off brake after stop.
