More test results are needed. You need to check the clutch hydraulics ( i can post a how-to for this).

Vitals also help, such as mileage, years of ownership, relationship to past owner (and general idea of driver ability).

Does it shift fine with the car off?

How bad is it if you put it into 2nd at a stop and then into first?

The clutch disk HAS to slip in order to propel the car forward with out a sudden jerk or a stall.

If you cant put it into first but you can with all the other gears with the engine off and clutch pedal down, it then sounds like you have an internal issue with the tranny or shift tower.

I would check your fluid level, and then replace it with Mobile 1 synthetic ATF.

Sounds like your synchronier is wore, either that or brunt out blocker ring, tranny will have to come apart, or find a used 1.
